Story of varadha’s emergence

<< Part 9

asuras craved to ransack the yAgaSAlai, ravage brahmA’s yAgam and annihilate his intent to have a holy view of God and safeguard his position as brahmA.

Gathered in large numbers, they approached the site of yAgam. As is his wont and practice brahmA bowed and looked to God.

Just then, with thunderous sound Lord narasimha rose from the centre of the hall, facing westwards. He saved the yAgam, brahmA and others from the peril. This we learn from SlOkas (verses) in purANa

nrusimhO  yagyasAlAyA: madhyE SailaScha paSchimE| thathraivAsIth makam rakshan asUrEBhya: samanthatha: ||

brahmA stood in amazement, overwhelmed.

“Oh imaiyOr thalaivA!  (Leader of dhEvas – the tribe who don’t wink eyes ever) Even before we solicit and seek you, the very moment we think of you, you rush to our rescue and offer protection. Can there be anybody other than you with this kind of reputation and distinction?

As the halo, circle of light, spreads around all space, you occupy all space, you are omnipresent. You have this motherly care and mercy. Who can have the competence of describing this unique trait of yours?

Further your Lordship has emanated as narahari , narasimha. Among all your avathAras (manifestations and advents in the world), this has the honour of being celebrated as paramount. It is a feast to my eyes. I am blessed and fisted. Thus worshipped brahmA in so many words.

vEdhAntha dhEsikan says – “thrINi  jaganthyakuNda mahimA vaikunta kantIrava

God is called vaikuNtan.

vaikuNta kaNtIravan or “bhagavath simham” – means God in the form of lion. (kantIrava means the one roaring from throat, i.e., the lion).

He emerged in the form of a combination of man and lion not only to protect and shield prahlAdha; it was also for shielding and guarding the three worlds – asserts vEdhAnta dhEsikan in dhaSAvathAra sthOthram.

How true these words are in brahamA’s case?

It is not imperative for God to appear as narasimha to save the veLvi. Still, it had occurred in His compassionate heart that He stay here to protect mankind after rescuing yAgam. That is why He had descended on the earth.

brahmA lost himself in “mUri nimirndhu muzhangip purappattu” (from thiruppAvai) – Beauty of the lion which marched upright with a roar.

Not only brahmA, vaSishta, marIchi and other saints, who are known to have conquered desires too, loved the sight of God.

His beauty would make even manmadha fall for Him. Only because of this, God is named kAman. In thamizh, kAman is called as “vEL”.   This vEL, lovingly, has chosen this place to reside (vEL irukkai). It has come to known as veLukkai.

azhagiyAn thAne ariyuruvan thAne” (This graceful figure of extreme beauty. This is the God in the garb of this lion) ! – said the light of thirumazhisai (thirumazhisai Azhwar in nAnmugan thiruvandhAdhi).

That is why God is called “azhagiya singam”. sahasranAma also refers to Him as “nArasimha vapu: SrIman”, meaning one in possession of wealth. His huge wealth is His beauty and elegance.

Among His avathAras, some have the form of animals. In some others, He takes the human form.

parASara bhattar in SrI rangarAja sthavam elaborates “Some are used to drinking milk without ever having tasted sugar. Some have a craze for sugar but would not have taken milk. But when sugar is added to milk, when milk and sugar are mixed, and the mixture consumed, the consumer would regret having missed their taste so far in life.

If God’s “birth” as animals is akin to milk, His human forms may be likened to sugar. But the avathAra which is like a blend of milk and sugar (mixture of human and animal) is only narasimha avathAra. How sweetly explained!

Scriptures proclaim, “sathyam vidhAthum nija bruthya bhAshitham” – For the sake of ardent adherent and worshipper, God comes rushing to protect, like in the case of prahlAdha, who is an ardent adherent and worshipper.

brahmA also was an equally devoted, devout follower. So here too bhagavAn narahari appeared as the saviour of yAgam.

dhravanthi dhaithya: praNamanthi dhEvathA:” –  When people sing in praise of God, there the evil minded flee. And dhEvas worship the singers.

How great the eminence of renowned kEsari is?

Knowing and enjoying the grandeur of our Lord – the ruler of vELukkai would give us endless joy. It is insatiable.

He has one other name also – mukundha nAyakan.  What does that mean?

We will discover.
