The meeting between jIyar and thirunArAyaNapuram Ayi
When mAmunigaL was mercifully explaining the meaning of sUthram (aphorism) 22 of AchArya hrudhayam [an esoteric compilation by piLLai lOkAchAryar’s younger brother, azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr, based on nammAzhwAr’s thiruvAimozhi], he was not much satisfied with the meanings that he was giving. He was wondering as to who would be able to explain it. He then remembered in his divine mind about thirunArANapuraththu Ayi and desired to hear the meanings for that sUthram from him. He then appealed to AzhwAr to permit him to meet thirunArAyaNapuraththu Ayi and with AzhwAr’s permission, set out to proceed mercifully towards thirunArAyaNapuram. Meanwhile, Ayi too had heard of the glories of mAmunigaL and wanted to worship him. He too set out from thirunArAyaNapuram and was close to AzhwAr thirunagari when the two met each other on the way. mAmunigaL exclaimed “eNNina palam edhirilE varap peRuvadhE ” (How fortunate that the benefit that adiyEn had thought of, has come right in front!). Both of them made deep salutations to each other with huge affection. They exchanged inquiries about each other. Looking at them, jIyar’s disciples exclaimed in joy “It appears as if periya nambi and rAmANujar have come face-to-face!” Subsequently, they reached thirukkurugUr (AzhwAr thirunagari). mAmunigaL heard from Ayi the meanings that he had desired to hear, on AchArya hrudhayam and composed a thaniyan on Ayi
AchArya hrudhayamyArthAs sakalA yEna dharSithA:
SrIsAnudhAsamamalam dhEvarAjam thamASrayE
(I bow down to that dhEvarAjar (Ayi) who is also known as SrIsAnudhAsar (thiruththAzhvarai dhAsar) through whom all the meanings of AchArya hrudhayam were explained fully). Ayi, not relishing such praise about him, composed the following on jIyar
pUdhUril vandhuthiththa puNNiyanO? pUngamazhum
thAdhArumagizh mArban thAnivanO – thUdhUra
vandha nedumAlO? maNavALa mAmunivan
endhai ivar mUvarilum yAr?
(Is he the divine person who incarnated at SrIperumbudhUr [rAmAnujar]? Is he the one who has a fragrant garland on his chest [nammAzhwAr]? Is he thirumAL (consort of SrI mahAlakshmi) who came to carry out the task of a messenger? Who, among these three, is my lord, maNavALa mAmunivan?) cherishing jIyar as a distinguished incarnation. He stayed in AzhwAr thirunagari for some time.
People in thirunArAyaNapuram, who were jealous of him, utilising his long absence from thirunArAyaNapuram, spread the word that he has attained thirunAdu (holy abode, SrIvaikuNtam), and submitted everything which he had in his divine residence to the temple store, to be accepted by selvappiLLai (name of sarvESvaran at thirunArAyaNapuram temple). Ayi, around that time, mercifully returned to thirunArAyaNapuram [from AzhwAr thirunagari], heard the events which happened there and was very pleased, recalling gIthA SlOkam “yasyAnugram ichchAmi thaysa viththam harAmyaham” (whosoever I wish to shower my mercy upon, I steal his wealth). Since his wealth has been taken by sarvESvaran, he felt happy that he has become a subject for his mercy. Tears of joy rolled from his eyes thinking “yasyaithE thasyathadhdhanam” (the owner claiming his property is apt only). He then sought the idol of gyAnappirAn (varAhar vigraham) alone for his daily worship and left the rest with the temple itself as his offering to yAdhavagirinilaiyan (sarvESvaran , the resident of yAdhavagiri)
