eRumbiyappA takes refuge under jIyar

Later a SrIvaishNava visited eRumbi on his way to thirumalai hills. appA saw him, invited him and asked him to mercifully narrate about kOyil (SrIrangam temple) and mAmunigaL. The SrIvaisshNava told him “kandhAdai aiyangArs such as kandhAdai aNNan, other eminent persons such as thiruvAzhiyAzhwAr piLLai and many SrIvaishNavas took refuge under the divine feet of mAmunigaL; jIya’s glories are increasing day by day”. appA felt very happy in his divine mind upon hearing this and presented the SrIvaishNava with several gifts. He then told the SrIvaishNava “We have heard briefly about the glories of mAmunigaL now through you. You should describe these events as well as about jIyar returning to SrIrangam from AzhwAr thirunagari”. He further told him “Please return soon from thiruvEngadam. We will accompany you on your way to SrIrangam”. He then went to his revered father and told him about these events. His father told him “It appears that you wish to take refuge under jIyar’s divine feet. I feel that it will not work out fine, now. If you wish, you pay him your respects, hear from him about appropriate meanings, have SrIpAdhathIrtham (the divine water from his divine feet) and accept prasAdam”. Meanwhile, the SrIvaishNava returned from thirumalai. eRumbiyappA went with him to SrIrangam. He worshipped the divine feet of namperumAL, went to the divine residence of periya kandhAdai aNNan, who was his close friend and had food. Then he went to jIyar’s divine residence. jIyar knew that eRumbiyappA was a learned person. He explained the detailed meanings of pravESam (introduction) for thiruvAimozhi 1st pAsuram uyarvaRa uyarnalam which deals with sarvESvaran’s qualities of parathvam (supreme entity). appA, on hearing jIyar’s upanyAsam was wonder-struck and said “We have heard that jIyar is very fluent in thamizh and not that fluent in samskrutham. He is an expert in both vEdhAnthams (samskrutham and dhrAvidam)” jIyar was very affectionate towards him and requested him to have food in the matam. appA responded saying

yathyannam yathipAthrasnam yathinA prEshithamcha yath
annathrayam nabhOkthavyam bhukthvA chAndhrAyaNam charEth

(the food of sanyAsis (ascetics), the food from the vessels of sanyAsis and the food sent by sanyAsis  – these three types of food are forbidden from eating. If one eats such food, he has to observe chAndhrAyaNa vratham as atonement), not heeding to the viSesha (distinguished) SAsthram (there are two ways to observe SAsthram – the normal SAsthram when everything is normal and a distinguished SAsthram which is to be observed during exceptional times). He did not take refuge under jIyar’s divine feet; did not go to kandhAdai aNNan’s divine residence too, disliking him completely and left for eRumbi immediately.

On reaching home, he wanted to open the kOyilAzhwAr (the place where the thiruvArAdhanap perumAL vigraham (idol of sarvESvaran whom he worships everyday) of chakravarthi thirumagan (SrI rAma) had been kept). Despite trying in various ways, he could not open the door of kOyilAzhwAr. He was very much in grief due to this and did not eat anything. When he reclined in the night, in his dream chakravarthi thirumagan came and told him

SEsha: SrImAnajanihipurA saumyajAmAthruyOgI bhOgIbhUthas                                          thadhanubhagavAn rAghavasyAnujanmA
bhUthvA bhUyO varavaramunir bhUyasApAsamAna: rakshyathyasmAn
raghukulapathE rAsthithOpathrapItam
bhUthvA bhavyO varavaramunir bhOginAm sArvabhauma: SrImadhrangE
vasathivijayI viSvasamrakshaNArtham
thathvam kanthum vraja SaraNamithyAdhiSath rAghavOyam svapnE
sOyam varavaragurus samSrayO mAdhruSAnAm

(This maNavALa mAmunigaL was initially thiruvananthAzhwAn (AdhiSEshan) having kainkaryaSrI (wealth of service). The same King of snakes, later incarnated as lakshmaNa, the brother of rAmapirAn. Later, he incarnated as maNavALa mAmunigaL, who is easily approachable for his followers and is protecting us sitting on the throne of chakravarthi thirumagan. “AdhiSEshan has reincarnated as maNavALa mAmunigaL and living in the most eminent way at SrIrangam, in order to protect the world. In order to get thathvagyAnam (knowledge of true entities) you take refuge under him” – thus ordered chakravarthi thirumagan in appA’s dream. Such maNavALa mAmunigaL is apt for people like us to take refuge under him).
