eRumbiyappA’s thiruvArAdhanap perumAL chakravarthith thirumagan ordered him in his dream “You have carried out an offence on maNavALa mAmunigaL who is a reincarnation of AdhiSEshan. Have you not heard of SrI nAradha bhagavAn’s origin ‘bhagavadh bhaktha sambhuktha pAthra sishtOdhanArAth kOpidhAsI suthOpyAsI samruthO vai nAradhObhavath (by lovingly partaking of the remnants of food from the vessel of a devotee of bhagavAn, the son of a vEsi (courtesan), after his death, became nAradha bhagavAn)?’ Unless you take refuge under the divine feet of jIyar and offer your apologies to him, we will not accept thiruvArAdhanam from you. Go immediately”. appA woke up from his sleep and kept wondering at the dream which he had. He left immediately for kOyil (SrIrangam), reciting the SlOkam
angEkavErA kanyAyAs thungEbhuvana mangaLE
rangE dhAmni sukhAsInam vandhE varavaram munim
(I take refuge under the divine feet of maNavALa mAmunigaL who has mercifully taken residence in the divine abode of SrI rangam, which appears like an auspicious place for all the worlds, in the middle of the river kAvEri). Around that time, jIyar was coming mercifully to worship perumAL. As soon as appA saw jIyar, he prostrated before jIyar’s divine feet as said in “dhaNdavath praNamEth bhUmAvupEdhya gurum anvaham” (one should approach his AchAryan every day and prostrate before him, just like how a stick will fall when allowed to let go). jIyar too looked at him with his merciful glance as said in “lOchanAbhyAm pipanniva” (imbibing him with his eyes). appA, fully engaged with the beauty of jIyar’s divine, auspicious form started reciting pUrvadhinacharya starting from mayipraviSathi SrIman and ending with mayiprasAdhapravaNam.
jIyar, being fully engaged in uplifting eRumbiyappA, returned to his matam considering that there is no benefit higher than AthmalAbham (benefit of correcting an AthmA) and with the desire of accepting appA, told his followers “Go to the temple, worship perumAL and return”. When they returned after worshipping perumAL, he told them that perumAL was donning such and such adornment, he had such and such food etc. They were in wonderment at his omniscience, seeing that everything which they had seen in the temple was exactly how jIyar had described them. appA, having come from afar, in order to get rid of his longing which he had on his way to SrIrangam, kept looking at mAmunigaL, just as a hungry man looks at food. Just as it has been said in dhinacharyA “bhavanthamEva nIranthram paSyanvasyEna chEthasA” (adiyEn would keep looking at your highness, being under your highness’ spell), enjoying jIyar’s divine auspicious form as his dhArakam (sustenance), pOshakam (nourishment) and bhOgyam (enjoyment).
The next morning, in the early hours, aNNan and others came mercifully to the entrance of jIyar’s retiring room and recited the following SlOkam to awaken him from his sleep
ravirudhayathyathApi navinaSyathimEthimiram
vikasathi pankajam hrudhayapankajamEva nama
varavara yOgivarya! varaNIya guNaikanidhE!
jayajayadhEva! jAgrahi janEshu nidhEhi dhruSam
(Though the sun has risen, the darkness in adiyEn’s mind has not been removed. Lotus flowers have blossomed in ponds, but adiyEn’s mind of lotus has not blossomed. Oh the treasure of coveted auspicious qualities! Oh lord! Oh maNavALa mAmuni! dhEvarIr should awaken victoriously. dhEvarIr should open the divine eyes. dhEvarIr should shower dhEvarIr’s mercy on those who have taken refuge under dhEvarIr). mAmunigaL got up, recited rahasyathrayam (thirumanthram, dhvayam and charama SlOkam) starting with guruparamparA (the lineage of AchAryas). Of these, he would mercifully recite emperumAn’s para, vyUha and antharyAmi qualities through thirumanthram, vibhava qualities through charama SlOkam and the completeness in the qualities of archA (vigraha form) through dhvayam.
