appiLLai and appiLLAr take refuge under jIyar’s divine feet

After completing the regulation of seven gOthrams, eRUmbiyappA decided to leave for eRumbi, but the omens were not good. He prostrated before jIyar who told him with happiness “A wonderful event has to occur here. You could leave on a good day”. Hearing this, eminent persons were telling each other “It seems that an amazing event is going to take place” though they were not sure of what it was.

In a few days, appiLLai and appiLLAr came there with their families in order to worship perumAL. They did not have any affection towards the divine feet of jIyar. They stayed on the banks of kAvEri, for two days, analysing the anushtAnams (activities) of jIyar, his dexterity in speaking, how kandhAdai aNNan and his clan had taken refuge under his divine feet and wondering “How did this happen?” appiLLai called appiLLAr and asked him “Could this happen?” appiLLAr told him “eRumbiyappA is an expert in all SAsthras. He is an exceptionally great AchAraseelar (one who observes various ordained activities correctly). He would not have done like this. We will go and enquire”. He went close to jIyar’s matam, told a person who was his confidante and who was capable “Go and tell eRumbiyappA that appiLLAn has come. If eRumbiyappA is present there, he will come soon. If it is someone else there, he will ask ‘Who is appiLLAn?’ ” That person found out who eRumbiyappA was and prostrated before him. He told appA “appiLLAr is waiting in the street. He asked adiyEn to inform dhEvarIr about his arrival” appA was very happy to hear this and said mercifully “It is a good time for him”. He left immediately to meet appiLLAr. appiLLAr saw the divine embossing [of Sankham and chakram] on appA’s shoulders, understood clearly as to what had happened and prostrated before appA.  appA enquired about his well-being and sat on the pedestal of a house, along with appiLLar. appA then shared with appiLLAr as to how perumAL, in order to uplift him, led him to take refuge under jIyar’s divine feet. appiLLAr gained clarity in his mind after hearing this. In order to get himself uplifted, he told appA that appiLLai and others are camping on the banks of divine kAvEri and requested appA to mercifully come there. appA returned to the matam, informed vAnamAmalai jIyar about the events which had happened until then and told him “dhEvarIr should shower mercy on adiyEn to correct them and to bring them here”. He then left along with appiLLAr , met appiLLai and spoke affectionately with him. He shared good instructions with appiLLai and created an urge in appiLLai by nurturing piousness in him. Meanwhile, vAnamAmalai jIyar went to where periya jIyar (maNavALa mAmunigaL) was present and told him “appiLLai and appiLLAr are eminent people; they have been staying on the banks of kAvEri. They have had an initiation on sAthvika sambhAshaNam (good conversation) already. eRumbiyappA has just gone there. Everything which should happen in order to get a good connection with AchAryar has occurred. It is very certain that they will have connection with dhEvarIr’s divine feet. Wouldn’t dhEvarIr’s divine mind always think ‘AthmalAbhAth param kinchidhanyath nAsthi’ (getting an AthmA in the path of righteousness is the greatest benefit. The rest are not)? It is also stated that AchAryan is upakArakan (benevolent) towards both (a disciple and perumAL). dhEvarIr should shower mercy on them. dhEvarIr’s divine mind should be such that eRumbiyappA’s and adiyEn’s desire would get fulfilled”. jIyar mercifully said “emperumAnAr (rAmANujar) has such a divine thought; one of them has the divine name of emperumAnAr”. vAnamAmalai jIyar was extremely happy on hearing this and mercifully requested jIyar “dhEvarIr should grant permission to adiyEn to go and receive them”.
