Reforms SrIvaishNavas who were nurturing enmity between them
Two SrIvaishNavas were arguing with each other because of their ego. In that same place, two dogs were also fighting with each other. jIyar saw that and asked them [dogs] “Are you also experts on SrIvachana bhUshaNam like these people since you seem to have developed egos and are debating?” Hearing his words, the two SrIvaishNavas became very ashamed of their behaviour and stopped fighting with each other, from that day.
Detachment towards materials
A few persons from the northern side, donning UrdhvapuNdrams, brought a few materials to jIyar’s matam. jIyar analysed the root of those materials [how they were earned] and found out that they were not earned in the proper way. He rejected the materials immediately. Later, from the lands belonging to the matam, materials were harvested and brought to the matam. Those working in those fields had their food in the matam. The place where they sat and ate were cleaned with cow dung and water. The ground was still wet from that. jIyar, who happened to come there around that time, asked the reason for the wetness. Those present there told him the reason. Immediately he submitted that share to SrI bhandAram (stores in the perumAL temple), though it was late in the night.
Isn’t an old squirrel capable of climbing a tree?
A very old lady, unable to leave the matam, started to sleep there itself in the night. Seeing this, jIyar made her to leave the matam. When people there asked him, he responded by saying “Even if a squirrel has become old, is it not capable of climbing a tree? This is reason enough for those who are unfavourable to us, to spread slander about us”
Punishment for a few for their basic nature
A SrIvaishNava brought thUdhuvaLaikkIrai (a type of fresh greens) to the matam, gave it to a lady who was engaged in the madappaLLi (kitchen) and told her “Cook this appropriately and serve”. That lady was indifferent towards it and did not use it for cooking. Later, when food was served, that SrIvaishNava looked at that lady quizzically. jIyar saw this and asked him mercifully as to what had happened. The SrIvaishNava narrated the events. Hearing this, jIyar asked her not to cook for six months. The lady prostrated and begged him for forgivance for the offence. jIyar then told her to carry on with her work as usual.
SrIvaishNavas should not come alone
A SrIvaishNava, by the name varandharum piLLai, earnestly desiring one day to worship the divine feet of jIyar, came alone and with lot of urge, prostrated at the divine feet of jIyar. jIyar was upset and said “SrIvaishNavas should not come alone like this, without the company of another SrIvaishNava [when going to pay respects]” and asked him to sit on the pedestal outside the matam for six months, before accepting him.
