thiruvEngadamudaiyAn spreads this thaniyan
There is another wonder associated with this thaniyan [starting with SrISailESa dhayApAthram and ending with maNavALa mAmuniyE innum oru nURRANdu irum]. azhagar (thirumAlirunjOlai emperumAn) in thennan uyar poruppu (the divine, tall mountain on the southern side, viz. thirumALiunjOlai) and appan (thiruvEngadamudaiyAn) in dheyva vadamalai (the divine mountain in the north) would be supportive of this thaniyan and help in spreading it. Sometimes before this thaniyan came into existence, a person, who was a mumukshu (desirous in attaining mOksham (SrIvaikuNtam)), was roaming in various places, thinking constantly of emperumAn. In order to uplift him, sarvESvaran taught him this thaniyan. That person took this thaniyan as his refuge and was constantly reciting it. Later, in the month of purattAsi (kanni mAsam) when brahmOthsavam was to be celebrated in thirumalai, that mumukshu reached thirumalai. Through the archakar, thiruvEngadamudaiyAn caught his hand, brought him to the assembly of SrIvaishNavas who were reciting iyal gOshti sARRUmaRai (completion of aruLichcheyals which is recited everyday in the morning). He told that person “Listen to what they are mercifully reciting” and he also told the SrIvaishNavas “Listen to what he has to recite”. periya kELvi jIyar (the main person, in charge of temple activities, recited the thaniyan which came through the message from sEnai mudhaliyAr (vishwaksEnar). On hearing this, that person prostrated before the assembly and told them “Please listen to adiyEn’s appeal” and continued “What a wondrous feature is this! The same SlOkam which adiyEn obtained in adiyEn’s dreams is being recited here”. jIyar told him “If that is the case, please recite that SlOkam”. The person immediately recited SrISailESa dhayApAthram… Everyone became very pleased on hearing this and told him as to how they had received that SlOkam (along with the thaniyans recited at the end). After hearing the entire account, that person reached kOyil (SrIrangam) with total devotion, and fell at the divine feet of jIyar, like an uprooted tree. jIyar, who is most compassionate, touched him with his divine hands and asked him “Who are you? What for have you come?” That person responded, starting with “adiyEn has been going on a pilgrimage to various divine abodes, as a mumukshu” and recounted the events which happened in his dream. Then, he recited that thaniyan and took jIyar’s divine feet on his head. He told jIyar “thiruvEngadamudaiyAn has showered his distinguished mercy on adiyEn, made adiyEn to recite this thaniyan in the divine assembly (at thirumalai) and enabled adiyEn to worship dhEvarIr’s divine feet”. jIyar, after hearing his words, said “You have received the distinguished mercy of bhagavAn. What do you desire?” That person said “adiyEn has received the thaniyan which, in the form of manthram, is the upAyam (means) for attaining mOksham; adiyEn has attained that manthrapradha AchAryan (one who taught the manthram), thirumalaiyappan; adiyEn has also attained dhEvarIr, who is the manthra prathipAdhya dhEvathai (entity known through that manthram). Is there anything else left for adiyEn to desire?” He danced in total abandon, clapping his hands.
On hearing this, jIyar recited the SlOkam
manthrEth dhEvathAyAncha thathAmanthrapradhE gurau
thrishubhakthissadhAchAryA sAsiprathamasAdhanam
(one should carry out with constant devotion towards these three entities – the manthram, the dhEvathA (entity) who is explained by that manthram and the AchAryan who teaches the manthram; such devotion is the means to attain bhagavAn), exclaiming that this person has all the three! Isn’t this the feature which is required in order to fulfil one’s qualification! He was very pleased and carried out panchasamskAram starting with thApa etc and gave him the dhAsya nAmam (name of the servitor) “thiruvEngadarAmAnujadhAsar”. perumAL too told him “Oh thiruvEndgadarAmAnuja dhAsar! Come! We grant you mElvIdu (SrIvaikuNtam)” and offered him SrI SatakOpan. Immediately that person ascended mercifully to thirunAdu (SrIvaikuNtam). Everyone assembled there, carried out the final rites for him befitting eminent people and praised the glory of jIyar.
