thirumAlirunjOlai azhagar spreads this thaniyan
A jIyar, who had connection with the divine feet of maNavALa mAmunigaL, was carrying out all the kainkaryams at azhagar thirumalai (thirumAlirunjOlai). He was constantly meditating on the AthmaguNams (qualities of the soul) and vigrahaguNams (beauty of the divine form) of his AchAryar, the periya jIyar. He was circumambulating the temple and was thinking that a thaniyan about jIyar (maNavALa mAmunigaL) should emanate from eminent persons which could be constantly meditated upon. He reached vishwaksEnar’s sannidhi, thinking this way, and worshipping vishwaksEnar when the temple archakar came there to carry out thiruvArAdhanam (divine worship) for vishwaksEnar. He carried out thiruvandhikkAppu (showing lit camphor as a protection for the vigraham) when he recited aloud the following SlOkam
SrISailasundharESasya kainkaryanirathOyathi:
amanyatha gurOssvasya padhyasambhavam Aryatha:
(a jIyar, who is immersed in carrying out kainkaryam to the azhagar at theRkuth thirumalai (the divine mountain in the southern direction) thought that a thaniyan should emanate from the divine words of eminent people) and went to perumAL’s sannidhi to continue his activity. At that time, a person by the name of sEnai mudhaliyAr, who had a connection with maNavALa mAmunigaL’s divine feet, after carrying out managaLASAsanam at various divine abodes in the southern direction, came mercifully to azhagar kOyil to worship the divine feet of perumAL there. jIyar [referred to above] was much pleased on seeing him and took him to perumAL’s sannidhi to carry out managaLASAsanam. azhagar (perumAL), showered his mercy on that sEnai mudhaliyAr, offering him thIrtham (sacred water). He kept SrI SatakOpan (his divine feet) on the head of sEnai mudhaliyAr and said, through the archakar
jihvAgrE thavavayAmi sthithvAva supAvanam
padhyam thvadhAryavishayam munErasya mamAgyayA
(I am going to sit at the tip of your tongue and recite. Tell that which is my order and which is the most sacred about your AchAryar, maNavALa mAmunigaL, to this jIyar). On hearing this, sEnai mudhaliyAr, as said in the SlOkam
dhanyOsmIthicha sEnESa dhESikOvadhatha svayam
vahanSirasi dhEvasya pAdhau paramapAvanau
(sEnai mudhaliyar, keeping the most sacred divine feet of azhagar on his head, said that he was indeed blessed and recited that SlOkam), keeping SrI SatakOpan on his head, recited the thaniyan starting with SrISailESa dhayApAthram. archakar too, on hearing this, recited that SlOkam to jIyar. In a few moments, both sEnai mudhaliyAr and the archakar forgot the SlOkam. Both of them went to jIyar’s matam and requested him to mercifully recite the thaniyan. jIyar asked them “You were the ones who mercifully recited this. Do you wish to hear it?” sEnai mudhaliyAr said “adiyEn does not know anything. This has been mercifully stated by sundhararAjar (divine name of azhagar at thirumAlirunjOlai) on sundharajAmAthrumuni (azhagiya mAnavALa mAmunigaL) by himself”. jIyar recited the thaniyan and all three became very pleased and took that thaniyan as their refuge.
sEnai mudhaliyAr, with lot of affection, wanted to go to kOyil (SrIrangam) and tell everyone about this incident. With a great urge, he reached SrIrangam, prostrated before the jIyar at his assembly and narrated the incident to everyone. All were very pleased, hearing this and said “You have mercifully brought out that which was very pleasing for thiruvEngadamudaiyAn and azhagar! What a glory is this, for jIyar!”
vAnamAmalai jIyar and others praise jIyar
vAnamAmalai rAmAnuja jIyar was very ecstatic and remained dumbfounded. jIyar touched him with his divine hands and told him “Why don’t you speak a few words as an outlet for your happiness?” vAnamAmalai jIyar immediately said, looking at kandhAdai aNNan “Aren’t we the ones who are imbibing the milk which is overflowing like this from both the bosoms!” [the reference here is to the two lines of the jIyar’s thaniyan]; aNNan exclaimed “The way dhEvarIr has put it, is sweeter than that milk”; prathivAdhi bhayankara aNNA, praising aNNan, said “Each of what the two of you have spoken is superior to the other!” appiLLai added to these, saying “The second line of the gem among manthrams [this could be taken as dhvaya mahA manthram or maNavALa mAmunigaL’s thaniyan] is superior to the first line” bhattar pirAn jIyar said “SatakOpa dhvayam is superior to dhvayam; rAmAnuja dhvayam is superior to SatakOpa dhvayam; (more than that) this thaniyan, which is a salutation for our AchAryar, is the greatest”, thus praising eloquently, the glories of jIyar.
