thiruvAImozhip piLLai engages nAyanAr with udaiyavar’s (rAmAnujar’s) divine feet
piLLai (hereafter, the term piLLai will refer to thiruvAimozhip piLLai and the word nAyanAr will refer to azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr, i.e. mAmunigaL in his pUrvASramam) with happiness, showed the divine feet of udaiyavar to nAyanAr who was very happy having attained the paramapurushArtham (the supreme benefit) as mentioned in irAmAnusa nURRandhAdhi pAsuram verse “unpadhayugamE koNda vIttai eLidhinil eydhuvan” (I will easily attain the divine abode of your divine feet). piLLai too, desiring to engage with kainkaryam to the lotus-like divine feet of rAmAnujar, who himself had engaged with the divine feet of nammAzhwAr due to deep affection, carried out the same, keeping that as his dhAraka etc (source of sustenance, nourishment and enjoyment). He built a separate temple for udaiyavar, creating four streets around the temple, calling the place as rAmAnuja chathurvEdhi mangalam, making learned people to live in those streets so that they could worship rAmAnuja continuously. He was living in happiness, after doing all these.
nAyaNar composes yathirAja vimSathi
nAyaNar, as mercifully shown to him by piLLai, became very dedicated to the divine feet of rAmAnujar to such an extent that he was called as yathIndhra pravaNar (one who is deeply affectionate towards rAmAnujar). As a result of that affection, he composed yathirAja vimSathi, about rAmAnujar. He was praised for this benevolent act which would benefit those who came in later years too as said in the pAsuram
vallArgaL vAzththum kurukEsar thammai manaththu vaiththuch
chollAra vAzhththum maNavALa mAmuni thoNdar kuzhAm
ellAm thazhaikka edhirAjavinjadhi inRaLiththOn
pullAravindhath thiruththAL iraNdaiyum pORRu nenjE
(maNavALa mAmuni kept nammAzhwAr, who is praised by learned people, in his mind and praised him through his words. Such maNavALa mAmuni composed yathirAja vimSathi, consisting of twenty SlOkams, in order for the prosperity of the groups of devotees. Oh my heart! Praise the divine lotus feet of such maNavALa mAmuni).
After hearing yathirAja vimSathi, piLLai was very joyous and mercifully presented him with the divine vigraham (idol) of udayavar that he had found near thiruppuLiyAzhwAr (the divine tamarind tree inside which nammAzhwAr had taken residence throughout his life). There is a narrative about the uthsava vigraha (idol) of udaiyavar installed in bhavishyadhAchArya sannidhi in chathurvEdhi mangalam, which has been heard from eminent persons down the generations. madhurakavi AzhwAr (desirous of having the vigraha of nammAzhwAr) as ordained by nammAzhwAr in his dream, boiled the water of thAmiraparaNi. Initially, the vigraha of udaiyavar manifested, looking at which madhurakavi AzhwAr through his divine mind told AzhwAr “This vigraha is not your divine form”. AzhwAr told him “This is the vigraha of bhavishyadhAchArya who will be related to the thiruvAimozhi 4.3.1 pAsuram poliga poliga pAsuram. He is going to incarnate such that even kali purusha will run away as mentioned in the pAsuram kaliyum kedum kaNdukoNmin. Worship him, boil thAmiraparaNi water again, we will manifest as archA vigraham”. madhurakavi AzhwAr did as told him by nammAzhwAr and eminent people will say that the divine form of nammAzhwAr with upadhESa mudhrA (symbol of instructing others) which is seen in AzhwAr thirunagari temple manifested itself. Legend has it that this vigraha of udaiyavar was buried near the tamarind tree in AzhwAr thirunagari temple when invaders came there and AzhwAr had to emigrate from the temple. Eminent persons had said that this vigraha is to be worshipped along with AzhwAr in his sannidhi. It was later found by thiruvAimozhip piLLai during the cleaning of temple.
nAyanAr was also very ecstatic on receiving this vigraha and just as he had said in yathirAja vimSathi 19 “SrIman yathIndhra! thavadhivya pAdhAbja sEvAm SrISailanAtha karuNApariNAmadhaththAm ” (Oh eminent rAmAnuja! The service to your divine lotus-like feet is due to the divine mercy of SrI SailanAtha (thiruvAImozhip piLLai)), kept carrying out service to udaiyavar as mentioned in the SlOkam “yathIndhramEva nIranthram nishEvE dhaivadham param” (he was carrying out service to emperumAnAr (rAmAnujar) considering him firmly as the supreme entity). piLLai, who considered carrying out service to nammAzhwAr and emperumAnAr as the highest benefit, kept seeing nAyaNar’s gyAnabhakthyAdhi (knowledge, devotion etc) and was very supportive, considering these as his desired matters too.
