nAyanAr leaving for thiruvEngadam

nAyanAr thought in his divine mind to embark on a yAthrA (travel) to go to thiruvEngadam and other divine abodes in the northern parts of the country and to worship empeurmAns there. He went to periya perumAL’s sannidhi, worshipped perumAL and appealed to him “adiyEn would like dhEvarIr’s permission to go to thiruEngadam and worship his divine feet” perumAL acquiesced, offering him his sacred water, SatAri, divine garland etc. Just as it has been said “thadhasthEnAbhya anungyAthO yAthO dharaNim uththarAm” (being permitted by perumAL, he went to the divine abodes in the northern parts), he left on his yAthrA for the northern divine abodes.

thirukkOvalUr, thirukkadigai mangaLASAsanam

azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr left immediately for thirumalai. He proceeded to worship sendhAmaraikkaNNan (puNdarIkAkshap perumAL) with the purushakAram (recommendation) of pangayachchelvi thAyAr (sengamalavalli) at thiruveLLaRai, where, just as it has been said by periyAzhwAr “muppOdhum vAnavarEththum munivargaL” (celestial entities keep praising emperumAn at thiruveLLaRai, throughout the day, where people constantly keep thinking of auspicious things for you). He worshipped the emperumAn, received the sacred water and prasAdham there. As said in “pAdhEyam puNdarIkAksha nAmasankIrthanAmrutham” (the nectar of reciting the divine names of puNdarIkAkshan is the food for the way), he kept meditating on dhvayavachana (dhvaya mahAmanthram) on the way and with an urge, proceeded towards thirukkOvalUr as said in “pUngOvarlUr thozhudum pOdhu nenjE” (Oh my good heart! Keep worshipping the emperumAn at thirukkOvalUr). He took rest on the way at several places and reached thirukkOvalUr. He worshipped the divine feet of mudhalAzhwArs (the first three AzhwArs who initially met at thirukkOvalUr and recited the first three centums of the divine pAsurams, which later came to be collectively known as nAlAyira dhivya prabandham). With their recommendation, he worshipped thrivikramapperumAL. He recited the thirumozhi pAsuram 2.10.9 starting with “thUvadivil pArmagaL” (bhUmAdhEvi who has a beautiful divine form) and ending with “thirukkOvalUr adhanuL kaNdEn nAnE” (I worshipped inside the divine abode of thirukkOvalUr). He recited the mudhal thiruvandhAdhi pAsuram 86 “nIyum thirumagaLum ninRAyAl” (SrI mahAlakshmi and you stand together to shower your mercy on your followers). He then carried out mangaLASAsanam to thirukkOvalUr perumAn by reciting the thiruppAvai pAsuram 24 “anRivvulagam aLandhAy adi pORRi” (Long live the divine feet with which you measured all the worlds on that day!) He received the sacred water and prasAdham there. With thirukkOvalUr emperumAn pulling him back and the mercy of thiruvEngadaththAn pushing him forward, he proceeded towards thirumalai. Just as it has been said in thiruvAimozhi 3.3.8 pAsuram “kunRamEndhik kuLirmazhai kAththavan anRu gyAlam aLandha pirAn paran senRu sEr thiruvEngadam mAmalai …” (emperumAn had lifted the (gOvardhana) mountain and protected the cows and herdspeople from the cold rains; he had measured all the worlds with his feet; such emperumAn reached the huge hills of thiruvEngadam …), in the pAsuram “thiruvEngadaththAyan” (the cowherd who is residing at thiruvEngadam) and in “moyththa sOlai moy pUm thadam” (having closely packed orchards and a number of water bodies which are close to each other), he proceeded with the divine mind of worshipping the divine feet of such easily approachable thiruvEngadamudaiyAn (one who owns thirumalai) with a huge following and with lot of craving. On the way, he worshipped thakkAn (emperumAn) who resides in thirukkadigai (present day shOLingapuram) surrounded by long orchards and akkArakkani (sweet fruit made of sugar) who is residing on top of the hill at shOLingapuram. He was offered materials and worshipped by eminent persons from eRumbi, a place near shOLingapuram; he showered his affection for them and left from there.
