While prathivAdhi bhayankaram aNNA was carrying out service to thiruvEngadamudaiyAn by bringing thirumanjanam (water) for his thiruvArAdhanam (divine worship) from AkASa gangai, a SrIvaishNava came to thirumalai from kOyil (SrIrangam) to worship thiruvEngadamudaiyAn. aNNA helped him in worshipping perumAL, in getting sacred water etc. He kept him by his side throughout the day, hearing from him about the happenings in SrIrangam temple, food offered to perumAL, the temple festivities and the incomparable glories of maNavALa mAmunigaL. The next day when he set out to bring water for perumAL’s thiruvArAdhanam from AkASagangai, he took the SrIvaishNava with him. Just as it has been said in “SruNOmyaham prIthikaram mama nAthasya kIrthanam” (I am listening to the glories of my lord which make me happy), he asked the SrIvaishNava to tell him about the dhinacharyai (the daily activities) of maNavALa mAmunigaL and his amazing glories. With only these in his thoughts, he brought the water for thirumanjanam and was about to add the fragrant powders such as cardamom, clove, camphor etc when an EkAngi (an assistant to the jIyar, who is normally a bachelor) came running and took the pot away, for thirumanjanam. aNNA said “the thirumanjana dhravyams (fragrant materials) have not been added”. Without listening to aNNA, the EkAngi took the pot of water and offered it for thirumanjanam, which was mercifully conducted as usual. aNNA was distressed and carried the fragrant materials in a vessel and said “An offence has been committed”. The archakar said ecstatically “The fragrance in the water is more than what had been seen all along. The fragrance is amazing!” aNNA, being a bhAvagyar (knowing from emotions) thought “This is not mere happenstance; happiness is overflowing. The reason for this must be hearing the glories about jIyar”. He called the SrIvaishNava and told him “Since dhEvarIr has mercifully narrated the glories of maNavALa mAmunigaL which adiyEn listened to, adiyEn has become fortunate. appan’s (thivuvEngadamudaiyAn’s) divine mind is also very pleased. adiyEn should worship manAvALa mAmunigaL immediately”. appan (thiruvEngadamudaiyAn) was very happy and gave him permission.
Subsequently, after engaging with the thirumanjanam activities for some time, with the order of thiruvEngadamudaiyAn, aNNA, with his family, left for SrIrangam. On reaching SrIrangam, he prostrated to the divine abode, looking at the abode, without taking his eyes off it. He then had a bath, applied UrdhvapuNdrams and went to SrIranganArAyaNa jIyar matam. He went to the temple to offer worship in the correct sequence when he saw the assembly of jIyar in chithra maNtapam. JIyar was giving an upanyAsam (discourse) on the pravESam (introduction) for thiruvAimozhi decad 4.10 “onRum dhEvum”. Feeling exhilarated, aNNA prostrated before jIyar. jIyar asked him whether he was parathvaAdhi bhayankarar aNNA , enquired about his well-being, and saying “adiyEn is fortunate that adiyEn could have dhEvarIr’s dharSan after all these days”, embraced him. He then made aNNA to sit next him and proceeded with the upanyAsam. After he had completed the explanation of three pAsurams and stoped, aNNA praised him saying “Other than having connection with dhEvarIr’s divine feet, it is not possible for anyone to know the way AzhwAr had established the supremacy of bhagavAn”. jIyar held his hand and went to worship perumAL. After offering sacred water, SrISatakOpan etc, perumAL, through the archakar said “Welcome prathivAdhi bhayankarAchAriyar! You had been carrying out thirumanjanam kainkaryam at thirumalai with dedication. One day, since you were listening to the glories of maNavALa mAmunigaL, the water got purified and also got divine fragrance. Did you not come thinking how we were pleased with that! We will grant you a distinguished connection” and handed over aNNA to the divine hands of jIyar. They then reached the matam.
