The amazing incident at aNNan thirumALigai

When all the people gathered in the temple in order to witness the sARRumaRai of Idu uthsavam, kandhAdai aNNan’s dhEvi (wife) and other ladies who had lot of knowledge [in sampradhAyam] were reciting the glories of jIyar, together, in aNNan’s divine residence. At that time, a brahmachAri (student who was yet to get married) came there with a note, gave it to aNNan’s dhEvi and told her to hand it over to aNNan. She took the note read it and exclaimed “This SlOkam is excellent!” She looked for that brahmachAri to find out more about that SlOkam but he could not be traced. Everyone got up and went searching for him, but none could locate his whereabouts. Those who were there said emphatically that it is bhagavalleelai (a playful act by perumAL). Some of them went to the assembly in the periya thirumaNdapam [where the sARRUmaRai was going on] and submitted the note. On hearing this, as mentioned in the SlOkam

hatAth thasmith kshaNE kaSchith varNI samprApya pathrikAm

(suddenly at that time, a brahmachAri came there, gave a note in the hands of kOyil kandhAdai aNNan’s dhEvi), everyone assembled there was amazed. They read the SlOkam which was written in that note and found that it was SrISailESa dhayApAthram SlOkam and were wonderstruck. They meditated on the meaning of the thaniyan in line with thirumanthrArtham [SrISailam refers to thirumalaiyappan, who is the akAravAchyan (one who denotes the letter ‘a’ in praNavam), dhayApAthram refers to one who is the object of his mercy, viz. makAra vAchyan (the letter ‘ma’ in praNavam) who belongs to emperumAn, thus giving the relationship between the two, as in praNavam]. Eminent disciples such as vAnamAmalai rAmAnuja jIyar, kandhAdai aNNan, eRumbiyappA, prathivAdhi bhayankaram aNNA et al, found that the thaniyans which they had in their divine minds, which they had composed out of their devotion for maNavALa mAMunigaL, were part of this thaniyan and were very pleased that it was answering everyone’s wish. perumAL sent back AzhwArs et al with proper honours and went to his sannidhi where he was together with periya perumAL. All the servitors in the temple went as a group, accompanying jIyar through the divine streets of SrIrangam in a circumambulatory manner and left him in his divine matam. Then the temple servitors returned to the temple and to perumAL.’s sannidhi. perumAL was very pleased with them and said “We have seen that jIyar is “muppaththARAyirap perukkar” (one who explains Idu multifold times) and showered his mercy. All the disciples chanted jIyar’s thaniyan vAzhi thiruvAimozhippiLLai and carried out mangaLASAsanam. Just as it has been mentioned in the pAsuram

(Is it amazing that we call perumAL, who keeps his divine feet on the heads of his followers, ordained maNavALa mAMunigaL to explain the meanings of thiruvAImozhi through muppaththARAyiraththup padi and gave a thaniyan too for maNavALa mAmunigaL, as our lord!) all the people who were there kept reminiscing about that incident, engaging only with that, meditating on that name and auspicious qualities [of jIyar] and were much pleased.
