SrImath krishNa samAhvAya namO yAmuna sUnavE |
yath katAkshaika lakshyANam sulabha: SrIdharas sadhA ||
My worships belong to SrI krishNa (periyavAchchAn piLLai) who is the son of yAmunAchArya and by whose mercy srIman nArAyaNan is easily achievable.
‘SrI rAmAyaNa thani SlOkam’ is a vyAkyAnam (commentary) for a collection of SlOkams from SrI vAlmIki bhagavAn’s SrI rAmAyaNam which is glorified as Adhi kAvyam (the foremost poetic literature). It was composed by periyavAchchAn piLLai. periyavAchchAn pilLLai is considered to be one of the most important AchAryas, having been coronated in four simhAsanams (thrones), viz
- a simhAsanam for dhivyaprabandha vyAkyAnam – he has written commentaries for all of the divine works of AzhwArs
- a simhAsanam for vyAkyAnams for samskrutha literature – he has written commentaries for pUrvAchAryas’ samskrutha granthams such as sthOthra rathnam, chathu: SlOki, gadhya thrayam etc
- a simhAsanam for rahasya granthams – he has written rahasya granthams such as parandha rahasyam, mANikka mAlai etc
- a simhAsanam for vyAkyAnams for ithihAsams, purANams – he has written commentaries for important SlOkams from SrI rAmAyaNam, mahAbhAratham etc
SrI rAmAyaNam is glorious in many ways and is greatly celebrated by our pUrvAchAryas, as it brings out the essence of sAmAnya dharmam (common righteous principles) and viSEsha dharmam (special/deep righteous principles). Our pUrvAchAryas have quoted many SlOkams from SrI rAmAyaNam in their commentaries as important reference points. We are fortunate to have periyavAchchAn piLLai’s deep insight on this subject.
We will be seeing the concise meanings of this wonderful grantham in English, based on our series of lectures (grantha kAlakshEpam) on this topic.
