avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAcAryar reminds us the instructions of a trustworthy person (nampiLLai) relating to this principle.
sUthram 31
ivvidaththilE vEl vettip piLLaikku piLLai aruLichcheydha vArththaiyai smarippadhu.
Simple Explanation
Here, reminisce the merciful instructions of nampiLLai to vEl vettip piLLai.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
ivvidaththilE …
That is – vEl vettip piLLai asked nampiLLai “While surrendering to [the king of] the ocean, perumAL (SrI rAma) surrendered in a proper manner, following the rules such as facing east etc, just as other upAyams (means), is there certain prerequisites applicable for prapaththi too?”
nampiLLai mercifully explained to him – The following of certain rules we saw in perumAL is not due to the nature of this upAyam, prapaththi, but is based on the nature of the one who performed prapaththi; the one who advised perumAL to perform prapaththi, is SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn as said in SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 19.31 “samudhram rAghavO rAjA SaraNam ganthum arhathi” (rAghava, who is the king, is qualified to surrender to the ocean); such vibhIshaNAzhwAn himself did not take a holy dip in the ocean while surrendering to perumAL; with this, it is explained that perumAL being a descendant of ikshvAku, due to his naturally good conduct, surrendered along with his own rules, and SrI vibhIshaNAzhwAn being a rAkshasa, surrendered as he was [without following any rules]. Thus, qualified person need not earn disqualification and unqualified person need not earn qualification. One can perform prapaththi in the same state that one is in.
[Thus, the lack of restriction in prakAram (how to perform SaraNAgathi), is explained].
