avathArikai (Introduction)
Further, piLLai lOkAchAryar is clearly explaining that archAvathAram which is having such completeness of qualities is the apt target for surrender through the conduct of nammAzhwAr, who is prapanna jana kUtastha (the leader among the surrendered persons).
sUthram 35
AzhwArgaL pala idangaLilum prapaththi paNNiRRum archAvathAraththilE.
Simple Explanation
AzhwArs performed surrender in archAvathArams (emperumAn in deity form) in many occasions.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
AzhwArgaL …
AzhwArs are those who see emperumAn’s five forms such as para, vyUha, vibhava, antharyAmi and archA, very clearly as a fruit in one’s own hand, due to being blessed with clear knowledge and devotion towards emperumAn. Such AzhwArs, while repeatedly surrendering due to their great urge in reaching emperumAn, surrendered to archAvathAra emperumAn on many occasions; they surrendered to emperumAn’s other forms only on few occasions.
How is that?
nammAzhwAr, the leader of all the AzhwArs, performed prapaththi on many occasions in archAvathArams only as said in thiruvAimozhi 5.7.10 “ARenakku nin pAdhamE SaraNAgath thandhozhindhAy” (You (emperumAn) have bestowed on me your divine feet only which are the means to attain the goal, as the upAyam), thiruvAimozhi 5.8.11 “kazhalgaL avaiyE SaraNAgak koNda” (considered such krishNa’s divine feet which were revealed to him as the only means), thiruvAimozhi 5.9.11 “namperumAn adi mEl
sEmam koL then kurugUrch chatakOpan” (sarvESvaran who is having thousand names, can be surrendered to by everyone claiming “our lord”. nammAzhwAr, the leader of the orderly AzhwArthirunagari, having firm faith in the form of intelligence of such sarvESvaran’s divine feet being the bestower of tranquillity) and thiruvAimozhi 6.10.10 “un adik kIzh amarndhu pugundhEn” (I entered and took refuge under your divine feet). Only in thiruvAimozhi 5.10 “piRandhavARum”, AzhwAr surrendered in vibhavAvathAram (incarnation).
thirumangai AzhwAr too performed prapaththi in archAvathArams on many occasions as seen in periya thirumozhi 1.6.4 “vandhun thiruvadi adaindhEn naimisAraNiyaththuL endhAy” (Oh lord of naimiSAraNyam! I have come and surrendered unto your divine feet), periya thirumozhi 1.9.1 “viraiyAr thiruvEngadavA nAyEn vandhadaindhEn” (Oh SrInivAsa who is residing in the fragrant thiruvEngadam hill! I, who am like a dog, have come here and reached you), periya thirumozhi 4.6.1 “kAvaLampAdi mEya kaNNanE kaLaigaN nIyE” (Oh krishNa who is remaining firm in kAvaLampAdi! You are my protector), periya thirumozhi 5.8.1 “AzhivaNNA nin adiyiNai adaindhEn aNi pozhil thiruvarangaththammAnE” (Oh one who is having ocean like complexion! Oh lord of SrIrangam which is having beautiful gardens! I have reached your divine feet).
Similarly, we can observe in the case of other AzhwArs too in their prabandhams.
The word “cha” (um in the end, i.e. also) in prapaththi paNNiRRum is related to the “cha” in pUrthiyuLLadhum.
