avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar explains the effect caused by the change of state of bhakthi which breaks one’s commitment to prapaththi.

sUthram 52

thannaip pENavum paNNum dharikkavum paNNum.

Simple Explanation

It will lead to nurturing oneself and sustaining oneself.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

thannai …

thannaip pENavum paNNum

As said in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 3.7.8 “kARai pUNum kaNNAdi kANum than kaiyil vaLai kulukkum kURai udukkum ayarkkum than kOvaich chevvAyth thiruththum” (She wears the golden ornament on her neck, shakes her bangles, wears nice garments, applies colours to her reddish lips), the highly evolved state of bhakthi will make them decorate themselves to make him come to them. That is – it will make them engage in self effort. This self decoration is a sample for other aspects like performing madal, sending messenger etc.

dharikkavum paNNum

Since they (AzhwArs) cannot sustain even for a fraction of a moment in separation from bhagavAn, the same overwhelming bhakthi which made them engage in self-effort to make him come, will make them show romantic anger and say as in thiruvAimozhi 6.2.2 “pOgu nambi” (Oh complete one! Go away!) and thiruvAimozhi 6.2.6 “kazhagamEREl nambi” (Oh complete one! Don’t enter our assembly!), push him away due to dislike and sustain themselves.

Thus, with these two, it is explained that this overwhelming bhakthi will cause the opposite of what is said in thiruvAimozhi 5.8.3 “ennAn seygEn” (What can I do?) and thiruvAimozhi 5.8.7 “dhariyEn ini” (I cannot sustain myself anymore). Hence, their losing faith in prapaththi and engaging in self-effort is due to the highly evolved state of bhakthi.
