vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

periya udaiyArum piLLai thirunaRaiyUr araiyarum udambai upEkshiththArgaL

SrI jatAyu mahArAjar is fondly called as periya udaiyAr by our SrIvaishNava elders. perumAL arrived in panchavati and acknowledged him as said in SrI rAmAyaNam AraNya kANdam 15.19 “idham puNyam idham mEthyam idham bahUmrugadhvijam | iha vathsyAmi saumithrE sArdha mEthEna pakshiNA ||” (Oh lakshmaNa! This place gives virtues; it is pure; it is filled with many animals and birds; I am going to live with jatAyu mahArAjar, who is the king of birds, here); from that time onwards, jatAyu remained very loving and caring towards SrI rAma and lived very close to SrI rAma’s hermitage; at that time, rAvaNa came and took away pirAtti and she saw him on top of a tree and called out his name saying “rAvaNa is abducting me in this manner”; while he was sleeping, he heard that sorrowful cry and woke up and saw that rAvaNa was carrying her; he gave him good advice saying “this is not good for you” and rAvaNa did not listen to him. He firmly thought “We cannot let this happen while we are alive; either we will fight and rescue her or we will perish” and fought a great battle with him fiercely since he had great valour and finally lost his life being hit by rAvaNa.

piLLai thirunaRaiyUr araiyar along with his family went to worship vEdha nArAyaNap perumAL in [thottiyam] thirunArAyaNapuram; miscreants from other faith set fire in that temple; those who were inside ran out; being unable to bear the damage for the divine form of emperumAn, out of overwhelming love, he decided to perish along with emperumAn’s divine form; at that time, his children too remained inside without leaving him; in this manner, he gave up his life along with his children by remaining inside the temple which was set afire.

chinthayanthikku udambu thannadaiyE pOyththu

That is – as said in SrIvishNu purANam 4.513-20 “kAchidhAvasathasyAnthE sthithvA dhrushtvA bahirgurum | thanmayathvEna gOvindham dhathyau meelitha lOchanA || thachchiththa vimalAhlAdha kshINa puNya chayA thadhA | thadhaprApthi mahAdhu:kha vileenASEsha pAthakA || chinthayanthI jagathsUthim parabrahma svarUpiNam | niruchvAsathayA mukthim gathAnyA gOpakanyakA ||” (A gOpikA who wanted to go and see krishNa, saw the elders in the living room, remained inside her room and meditated upon gOvindha with closed eyes. At that time, due to the pure bliss attained by placing her mind on krishNa, all her puNya got exhausted; due to the great sorrow attained by not reaching him, all her pApa got exhausted; due to meditating upon parabrahmam, who is the cause of the world, and having lost her breath, that gOpikA attained liberation from her body) – on hearing the divine flute sound from the place of the divine rAsa krIdA, she set out to go to SrI vrindhAvanam; but she could not proceed,  on seeing the elders; she remained there and meditated upon krishNa and became freed from puNya and pApa, due to enjoying pure bliss and great sorrow respectively; as she kept thinking about krishNa and as she could not reach him, being unable to bear it, she stopped breathing and her body left her without having to attempt for the same.
