avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Still, will this extra-ordinary action [of giving up one’s body] not become a hurdle for bhagavAn who is sidhdhOpAyam (readily available means) who does not tolerate any effort from the self?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds.

sUthram 92

upAya palamAy upEyAntharbhUthamAy irukkumadhu upAya prathibandhakam AgAdhu.

Simple Explanation

The action which is a result of [the efforts of] upAyam (bhagavAn who is readily available means) and which becomes an aspect of the goal, will not be a hurdle for the means.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

upAya …

upAya palam

This is the result of the efforts of bhagavAn who is the sidhdhOpAyam. As said in thiruvAimozhi 1.1.1 “mayarvaRa madhinalam aruLinan” (emperumAn who blessed AzhwAr with unblemished knowledge and devotion) and thiruvAimozhi 5.3.4 “pEramar kAdhal kadal puraiya viLaiviththa kAramar mEni nam kaNNan” (Our obedient krishNa, who is having cloud like divine form, made (abundant ocean like) devotion to occur) – emperumAn is the creator and nurturer of devotion which leads to such extra-ordinary actions. Hence, piLLai lOkAchAryar says that this action which is occurring due to being bound by bhakthi, is a result of upAyam.

upEya antharbhUtham

Since these actions such as performing madal etc are similar to kainkaryams which are done for emperumAn’s happiness as he will think “due to the great urge in reaching me, they are engaging in these actions with great anguish; they are going through such sufferings due to the desire in attaining me! How great!” and feel happy about it, they will become part of upEyam (goal).

upAya prathibandhakam AgAdhu

Such actions will not be a hurdle for such upAyam (bhagavAn) in fulfilling his commitment towards the AthmA.
