avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar seconds the question of a curious person asking “How does this detachment occur by these reasons [explained in previous sUthram]?” and mercifully explains the answer for it.

sUthram 103

piRakkum kramam enennil: azhagu agyAnaththai viLaikkum; aruL aruchiyai viLaikkum; AchAram achchaththai viLaikkum.

Simple Explanation

How does this detachment occur? Beauty causes ignorance; mercy causes distaste; conduct causes fear.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

piRakkum kramam …

azhagu agyAnaththai viLaikkum

Since his beauty will captivate one’s mind, it will make one become ignorant of worldly pleasures.

aruL aruchiyai viLaikkum

His mercy will make one to get disgusted with and spit on worldly pleasures when one sees those.

AchAram achchaththai viLaikkum

While having taste towards worldly pleasures, thinking “if we do not act according to their conduct, we will end up with disaster”, the conduct [of bhagavAn and pUrvAchAryas] will make one tremble to engage with those pleasures.

Hence it is implied that the detachment will occur in these manners.
