avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains the gradation in his attachment based on these (devotees and divine abodes) being goal and means.
sUthram 172
“kallum kanai kadalum” engiRapadiyE idhu sidhdhiththAl avaRRil Adharam mattamAy irukkum.
Simple Explanation
As said in periya thiruvandhAdhi 68 “kallum kanai kadalum” (thirumalA, the mountain, kshIrAbdhi, the resounding ocean), when the devotee is attained, his [emperumAn’s] attachment towards the divine abodes will be less.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
kallum …
That is – AzhwAr said “After emperumAn entered my heart, showing that he has no interest in anything else, as he is eternally residing in my heart with great attachment, have divine abodes such as thirumalA, kshIrAbdhi which is making tumultuous noise due to his presence, paramapadham which is unreachable for anyone, lost their sheen for him?” In the same manner, the heart of the devotee, that is, the goal, when attained, the attachment for the divine abodes which were desired by him as the means to attain the goal, will shrink. One will have great attachment towards the means, only until one attains the goal.
