avathArikai (Introduction)

Thus – by saying “the goodness one seeks for self is to be shunned” as said in sUthram 145nanmaithAnE thImayAyththu” (good qualities became harmful), sUthram 160thanakkuth thAn thEdum nanmai thImaiyOpAdhi vilakkAy irukkum” (When one seeks goodness for oneself with self efforts, that should be shunned just as evil aspects are shunned) and sUthram 176 “dhOsha nivruththithAnE dhOshamAmiRE” (praying to eliminate the body is in itself a defect), it is clear that the goodness bestowed by bhagavAn is to be pursued; in this manner, seeking goodness on one’s own to be shunned and bhagavAn bestowing goodness to be pursued is explained further through the words of a trustworthy personality.
