avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains with example “Not just that, if one seeks goodness on one’s own disregarding emperumAn, it will only lead to destruction”.
sUthram 178
avanai ozhiyath thAn thanakku nanmai thEdugaiyAvadhu – sthanandhaya prajayai mAthA pithAkkaL kaiyil ninRum vAngi gAthukanAna AttuvANiyan kaiyilE kAttik kodukkumApOlE iruppadhonRu.
Simple Explanation
Trying to seek goodness for self, disregarding emperumAn, is similar to taking away a nursing baby from its parents and handing it over to a murderous butcher.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
avanai …
That is – instead of bhagavAn, who is apt and a well-wisher for the jIvAthmA bestowing goodness to him, the self who is opposite to such bhagavAn [inapt and ill-wisher] seeking goodness for self is similar to forcefully taking away a nursing baby who has no knowledge etc which are useful to protect itself and is fully dependent on mother et al, from its mother and father, and handing it over for protecting it to a butcher who trades goat meat and who does not hesitate to kill and would even kill the child and mix the flesh with such goat meat. With this, it is explained that sarvESvaran is the protector for the AthmA and AthmA is the destroyer of the self.
