avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Even if a person who has gyAnam (knowledge) and anushtAnam (conduct) in full, which lead to bhagavAn, commits an offence towards bhAgavathas, will bhagavAn not give a small punishment and accept that person? Can it be said that those gyAnam and anushtAnam will be considered as insignificant and the offence will be strong and thereby lose emperumAn?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds to that.

sUthram 204

gyAnAnushtAnangaLai ozhindhAlum pERRukku avargaL pakkal sambandhamE amaigiRAppOlE, avai uNdAnAlum izhavukku avargaL pakkal apachAramE pOrum.

Simple Explanation

Just as the relationship with bhAgavathas is sufficient to attain the goal even if one is lacking in gyAnam and anushtAnam, even if those are present, an offence towards them is sufficient for losing the goal.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

gyAnAnushtAnangaLai …

That is – as said in “ubhAbhyAm Eva pakshAbhyAm AkASE pakshiNAm gathi: | thadhaiva gyAna karmAbhyAm prAyapthE bhagavAn hari: ||” (Just as birds fly on the sky with the two wings, similarly, hari who has six qualities in full is reached by gyAnam and anushtAnam) and in thiruviruththam 54 “vIsum siRagAl paraththIr viNNAdu nungatkeLidhu” (Oh birds who have wings which are used to fly! It is easy for you to reach paramapadham), even if one lacks in true knowledge about principles and matching conduct, the relationship with bhAgavathas is said to be independent means as said in bhArathvAja smruthi “paSur manushya: pakshIvA Echa vaishNava samSrayA: | thEnaiva thE prayAsyanthi thath vishNO: paramampadham ||” (Whoever it may be – four limbed animals, humans and birds, when surrendered to vaishNavas, due to that connection, one will attain vishNu’s highest abode of paramapadham) and parASara smruthi “yam yam spruSathi pANibhyAm yam yam paSyathi chakshushA: | sthAvarANyapi muchyanthE kimpunar bAndhavAjanA: ||” (When whatever is touched by the divine hands of great bhAgavathas, whatever is glanced by their divine eyes will be liberated, even if those are plants or trees, what to say about those who are related to such great bhAgavathas). Similarly, even if one is having such gyAnam and anushtAnam in full, the offences committed towards such bhAgavathas will be the independent means to lose bhagavAn.
