ANdaperumAL takes refuge under kandhAdai aNNan

One day jIyar called Sudhdhasathvam aNNA and told him mercifully “dhEvarIr is fortunate that just as madhurakavi AzhwAr was towards nammAzhwAr, dhEvarIr is towards aNNan, being a much liked person. One can carry out service to one’s AchAryan only until he remains in this world. Sustain by carrying out all the needs of aNNan” and blessed him. He then called ANdaperumAL, who is the grandson of kumANdUr AchchAn piLLai, who is very knowledgeable, who is an expert on all the SAsthras and told aNNan “Have him as a confidante for your divine feet and make him as a dharSana pravarthakar (one who spreads the philosophy of rAmAnujar)” and left ANdaperumAL under the care of aNNan who accepted him.

The divine incarnation of jIyar nAyanAr

Thus, while jIyar, who was having glories of uplifting all those who who attained his divine feet, was controlling the dharSanam, his pUrvASrama son (son before he embraced sanyAsam (renouncement) nammaiyan irAmAnusan, was growing up in AzhwAr thirunagari. At an appropriate time, he got married and after some time, a son was born to him. jIyar gave him the divine name of “azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr”. Later nammaiyan irAmAnusan shifted to SrIvillipuththUr and another son was born to him. He sent word to jIyar sannidhi, asking for a suitable divine name. jIyar mercifully said “When the infant is born in SrIvillipuththUr, why send word for suitable name! Give him the name of periyAzhwAr” The child was named periyAzhwAraiyan. After they grew up and became fit enough to be left under the care of a guru (teacher), they took refuge under the divine feet of jIyar. Of these two, azhagiya maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr would not leave jIyar’s divine feet even for a moment and was carrying out service to him. Since those who had attained jIyar’s divine feet had named their sons as nAyanAr (jIyar’s name before he embraced sanyAsam), the first grandson of jIyar was identified as jIyar nAyanAr and was called by that name. jIyar mercifully blessed him with his distinguished mercy, considering him as dharSana pravarthakar, just as nAthamuni had considered ALavandhAr. Being the grandson of AchAryar [jIyaar], he was very splendorous, like a bright lamp. The followers of jIyar’s divine feet said of him

asmAsu vathsalathayA krupayAsa bhUya:
svachchAvathIrNamiva saumyavaram munIndhram
AchAryapauthram abhirAmavara abhidhAnam
asmadhgurum guNanidhim sathatham ASrayAma:

(I always bow down to the divine feet of abhirAmavarar (azhagiya maNavALar) who, due to his motherly forbearance and divine mercy towards us, came amidst us due to his wish, as if maNavALa mAmunigal reincarnated; he is the treasured repository of auspicious qualities and the divine grandson of AchAryar [jIyar]) and kept meditating on this.

jIyar mercifully leaves for AzhwAr thirunagari

jIyar, who is considered as the leader of those who had nammAzhwAr’s affection, thought in his divine mind to go to his birth place of AzhwAr thirunagari which is praised as “bhagavan bhagavadh uthpavasthalee bhavathu SrInagarI garIyasi” (Oh one who is complete in all auspicious qualities! Let AzhwAr thirunagari, which is dhEvarIr’s divine place of incarnation shine as the most superior place amongst all places) and to worship the divine feet of AzhwAr there. Just as it has been said in kaNNInuN siRuththAmbu pAsuram “kurugUr nambI! muyalginREn undhan moy kazhaRku anbaiyE” (Oh the lord of thirukkurugUr! I am attempting to develop affection towards your great divine feet), with joy in his heart, he went to namperumAL and obtained his permission to leave for AzhwAr thirunagari. The companion who is reclining in SrIrangam came as the companion for his travel. jIyar reached kunthInagaram which is the divine place of incarnation of thiruvAimozhippiLLai and stayed there for three nights. He recited the following pAsuram in praise of thiruvAimozhippiLLai

chiththam thirumAl mEl vaiththaruLum sIr mannar
naththam idhu kANum nAm thozhil – muththarAyp
pOnArEyAgilum pUngamalaththALgaL thanai
thAmAra vaiththAr thalam

(This is the divine place of the great king [thiruvAimozhip piLLai] who kept his divine mind mercifully on SrIya: pathi, the consort of mAhAlakshmi. Even though he has become a mukthAthmA (one who has reached SrIvaikuNtam after getting liberated from here), he has kept his divine lotus like feet abundantly in this place). He worshipped the place and mercifully proceeded.
