avathArikai (Introduction)

piLLai lOkAchAryar gives another example to explain that the greatness of bhagavAn will engage everyone in performing mangaLASAsanam to him.

sUthram 247

iLaiya perumALai SrI guhap perumAL athiSankai paNNa, iruvaraiyum athiSankai paNNi SrI guhap perumAL parikaram perumALai nOkkiRRiRE.

Simple Explanation

SrI guhap perumAL unnecessarily doubted lakshmaNa’s intentions towards perumAL (SrI rAma). SrI guhap perumAL’s soldiers unnecessarily doubted both him and iLaiya perumAL and guarded perumAL.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

iLaiya perumALai …

That is – when perumAL mercifully arrived at SrungibErapuram and accepted SrI guhap perumAL (as his younger brother), iLaiya perumAL carefully made a bed and pirAtti and perumAL mercifully reclined on that. Since he is as said in “bAlyAth prabruthi susnigdha” (one who is loving towards perumAL from birth), fearing “What will happen to him?” iLaiya perumAL started guarding around them like a walking fort, with the quiver on his back, bow string tied to his finger and the launched bow. Seeing that, SrI guhap perumAL unnecessarily doubted iLaiya perumAL thinking “One younger brother used his mother to grab the kingdom and drove away perumAL to the forest with the sacred thread marking coronation still tied in hand; here is another younger brother like him; I am not sure about the harm he is going to do to perumAL, being in this posture” and further thought “If he thinks about harming perumAL, I will fully finish him” and followed him closely with the launched bow and arrows; his soldiers who would fulfil his commands, unnecessarily doubted both of them thinking “iLaiya perumAL is perumAL’s blood relative, SrI guhap perumAL is an angry hunter; what are they planning to do perumAL?” and each of them individually thought “if they think about harming perumAL, let me kill both of them and protect perumAL” and cared for him with the bows in their hands.

While SrI guhap perumAL explained the situation to SrI bharathAzhwAn, he explained the incident that happened in the night as said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 87.22 “niyamya prushtEthu thalAnguLithravAn Sarais supUrNAmidhUdhI paranthapa: | mahath dhanus sajyam apOhya lakshmaNO niSAmathishtath parithOsya kEvalam ||” (Having decorated with armour in his arms, lakshmaNa who would torment the enemies, having quiver filled with arrows, on his back, having his huge bow in the launched position, very carefully guarded perumAL in all the four directions, throughout the night) and SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 87.23 “thathas thvam chOththama chApabANa dhruth sthithObhavam thathra sa yathra lakshmaNa: | athandhribhir gyAthibhirAththa kArmukair mahEndhra kalpam paripAlyams thadhA ||” (Subsequently, I too having the best arrow and bow, followed lakshmaNa at each step; being awake carefully, along with my relatives who were having bows in their hands, I guarded perumAL who resembled great mEru mountain).
