avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “How so?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.
sUthram 253
avargaLukku ubhaya SEshathvaththaiyum azhiththu svarUpaththaik kumizh nIr uNNap paNNumadhu, ivarkku ubhaya vruththikkum hEthuvAy svarUpaththaik karaiyERRum.
Simple Explanation
The beauty which destroys the subservience towards both bhagavAn and bhAgavathas for other AzhwArs, will be the reason for periyAzhwAr’s subservience towards both and uplift his true nature.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
avargaLukku ubhaya SEshathvaththaiyum …
That is – for the rest of the AzhwArs who are fully focussed on enjoying bhagavAn and who will become overwhelmed with sorrow in his separation, subservience towards both bhagavAn and bhAgavathas (which is the ultimate stage of subservience towards bhagavAn) as said in periya thirumozhi 8.9.3 “kaNNapuram onRudaiyAnukku adiyEn oruvarkkuriyEnO” (Will I who am a servitor of the lord of thirukkaNNapuram, be owned by anyone else?) and in periya thirumozhi 8.10.3 “uRRadhum un adiyArkku adimai” (It is apt for me to be a servitor of your servitors), will be destroyed by the beauty of bhagavAn which will make the true nature of the self which is existing for the well-being of bhagavAn, totally forget about mangaLASAsanam and will make them do the following to destroy their subservience:
- To engage in the interest of self as said in periya thirumozhi 9.3.9 “namakkE nalam Adhalil” (since this is good for us to attain).
- Will make them say as in thiruvAimozhi 6.2.2 “pOgu nambi” (Oh lord! Go away) and thiruvAimozhi 6.2.6 “kazhagam EREl nambi” (Oh lord! Don’t enter our assembly)
- When well-wishers advice that it is not good to look out on one’s own to attain bhagavAn, abandoning them saying as in thiruvAimozhi 8.2.7 “ungaLOdu engaL idai illaiyE” (I don’t have anything to do with you).
- Speak angrily towards bhagavAn’s servitors as in thiruvAimozhi 1.4.1 “venjiRaip puL” (garudAzhwAr with very cruel wings)
But, for periyAzhwAr who fears seeing such beauty thinking “What will happen to such beauty?” and performs mangaLASAsanam, it will make him perform mangaLASAsanam to bhagavAn and bhAgavathas and increase his subservience towards both bhagavAn and bhAgavathas and will ensure that his true nature does not get drowned in bhagavAn, as said in:
- thiruppallANdu 1 “un sevvadi sevvithirukkAppu” (let your beautiful divine feet be protected)
- thiruppallANdu 2 “mangaiyum pallANdu” (Long live your divine consort SrI mahAlakshmi)
- thiruppallANdu 2 “sudarAzhiyum pallANdu” (Long live the radiant chakra)
- thiruppallANdu 2 “pAnjasanniyamum pallANdu” (Long live the conch named SrIpAnchajanya)
Thus, while bhagavAn’s beauty drowns the true nature of the rest of the AzhwArs, it makes periyAzhwAr react in this way and as their (other AzhwArs’) deep spot remains his shallow spot, mangaLASAsanam occurs for periyAzhwAr always unlike them who perform it occasionally.
