avathArikai (Introduction)

Thus, after mercifully explaining the identity of the favourable ones whose sahavAsam (companionship) was spoken in dhinacharyA sUthram (243) and the result of such sahavAsam, piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully explaining those who are unfavourable ones whose sahavAsam is to be abandoned.

sUthram 263

prathikUlarAgiRAr – dhEhAthmAbhimAnigaLum, svathanthrarum, anyaSEshabhUtharum, upAyAnthara nishtarum, svaprayOjanapararum.

Simple Explanation

The unfavourable ones are – those who consider body to be the same as soul, who consider themselves to be independent, who are surrendered to other dhEvathAs, who are pursuing other means (such as karma yOgam etc to reach bhagavAn) and who are focussed on their own interests (while pursuing bhagavAn).

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

prathikUlarAgiRAr …

prathikUlarAgiRAr

Those who are identified as unfavourable ones due to not qualifying to reside along as they will destroy our knowledge etc.

dhEhAthmAbhimAnigaL

Not knowing that there is a soul beyond the visible body, those who consider the body to be denoting “I” and treating the body to be the soul.

svathanthrar

While knowing well that the AthmA is beyond the body, considering the body to be owned by the self and not accepting subservience towards anyone.

anyaSEshabhUthar

While these persons accept subservience, they manifest it towards inapt persons.

upAyAnthara nishtar

While having subservience towards the apt lord, instead of considering surrender at his divine feet to be the means to attain such lord, pursuing other means such as karma yOgam etc.

svaprayOjanaparar

While pursing the lotus feet of the apt lord as the means, considering such surrender itself as the means (instead of lotus feet being the means) and considering the kainkaryam which is the result of such pursuit to be for their enjoyment (instead of bhagavAn’s enjoyment).

These persons are unfavourable for those who observe the following aspects:

  • AthmA being different from body as highlighted in the 3rd letter (ma) of praNavam.
  • AthmA to be subservient to bhagavAn as highlighted in chathurthi (fourth case) in first letter (a) of praNavam.
  • exclusive subservience towards bhagavAn as highlighted in the middle letter (u) of praNavam.
  • Not having any other means as highlighted in the middle word (nama:) of thirumanthram.
  • Not having any separate enjoyment as highlighted in the last word (nArAyaNAya) of thirumanthram.
