avathArikai (Introduction)

Subsequently, piLLai lOkAchAryar shows evidence for the principle of the self-interest occurring due to vishaya dhOsham (greatness of bhagavAn) being difficult to abandon.

sUthram 273

UmaiyarOdu sevidar vArththai” “katham anyadhichchadhi

Simple Explanation

nAchchiyar thirumozhi 12.1 “UmaiyarOdu sevidar vArththai”  (as a mute person speaks to a deaf person), sthOthra rathnam 27 “katham anyadhichchadhi” (how can we desire for anything else?)

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

UmaiyarOdu sevidar vArththai” “katham anyadhichchadhi

UmaiyarOdu sevidar vArththai

Starting with nAchchiyar thirumozhi 12.1 “maRRirundhIrgatku“, when the mother says “As we have firmly determined that the goal is attained by emperumAn’s grace, we should wait for his arrival at the proper time, you cannot become nervous like this”, ANdAL mercifully responds “You, who have no love for bhagavAn and are different from me, cannot understand my state; while I who have the love towards Sriya:pathi (divine consort of SrI mahAlakshmi) to recite his names constantly, should reach his place due to being unable to sustain without him; but I am unable to walk towards him; in such case, the words you say which stop me from reaching him are similar to a mute person who cannot talk, speaking to a dumb person who cannot hear”.

katham anyadhichchadhi

Starting with sthOthra rathnam 27 “thavAmruthasyandhini“, ALavandhAr mercifully says “How will my heart which is immersed in the honey-flowing divine lotus feet of your highness, desire for lowly aspects? A beetle which depends on honey, while a honey-filled lotus flower is present, will not only not search for a muLLi flower (grass flower) which is difficult to find and will not satisfy one’s taste buds, but will also not even look at it”.

As both ANdAL nAchchiyAr and ALavandhAr mercifully explain in this manner, since it appears that those who have become very attached towards bhagavAn, seeing his divine beauty, cannot be retracted, it is clear that the self-interest which occurs based on the defect [greatness] of bhagavAn is very difficult to give up.
