avathArikai (Introduction)

Subsequently, piLLai lOkAchAryar reveals how the prapanna fears for puNya and how he does not have any engagement in pApa to not give an opportunity to ISvara who is vathsala (having motherly forbearance) [looking for his sins to forgive him].

sUthram 280

ivan, puNyaththaip pApam enRirukkum, avan, pApaththaip puNyam enRirukkum; avanukku adhu kidaiyAdhu; ivan adhu seyyAn.

Simple Explanation

The prapanna will consider puNyam to be the same as pApam and bhagavAn will consider such prapanna’s pApam to be puNyam; [hence] bhagavAn will not get any sin from the prapanna [to forgive]; [because] prapanna will not do pApam.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

ivan puNyaththai … [the three sentences].

That is – since it is said in “thadhA vidhvAn puNya pApE vidhUya niranjana: paramam sAmyam upaithi” (At that time, the one who has seen brahmam, without any more relationship with prakruthi, sheds puNya and pApa, and attains equality with brahmam), the prapanna, who considers both puNya and pApa as hurdle for mOksha, will consider puNya, which is desired by worldly people since it leads to joy, to be the same as pApa which leads to sorrow, since it is undesirable due to the fact that it is a hurdle to attain bhagavAn, and be fearful about it.

ISvara who has great motherly forbearance to consider the vices of the devotee to be virtues, will joyfully accept the evil deeds of the prapanna to be good deeds.

Though bhagavAn remains in this manner, as this prapanna remains disciplined to not engage in evil deeds, for bhagavAn who is vathsala and who accepts the evil deeds of the prapanna to be good deeds, such experience will only be longed for and will not be attained.

Thus, previously explained kainkaryam which ought to be performed, is known through the particular manner, kainkaryam is of two types, what are those two types and on which aspects those kainkaryams are based on, were explained and an incidental doubt in such kainkaryams was clarified.
