avathArikai (Introduction)

Subsequently, starting with this sUthram “thAn hithOpadhESam paNNumbOdhu”  up to sUthram 365 “ugappum upakAra smruthiyum nadakka vENum“, to reveal the thoughts and discipleship towards the AchArya who instructs the previously explained principles, piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains the nature of a true AchArya, the nature of a true Sishya and their interactions, in prasakthAnuprasaktha (prasakthA – explaining incidental matters while explaining something, anuprasaktha – following such matters) manner. In the context of explaining the forbidden aspects [which are to be given up] for this prapanna, piLLai lOkAchAryar is mercifully explaining that even beyond those aspects, having wrong thoughts while instructing others, is highly forbidden.

sUthram 308

thAn hithOpadhESam paNNumbOdhu thannaiyum Sishyanaiyum palaththaiyum mARAdi ninaikkai krUra nishidhdham.

Simple Explanation

While instructing noble subjects, thinking wrongly about self, disciple and the result, is highly forbidden.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

thAn hithOpadhESam paNNumbOdhu …

That is – the AchArya who is complete in all the qualities which were explained in the previous section, while instructing the noble instructions in the form of manthra to those who came and served him with the intent be liberated, having wrong conception about self who is instructing, the disciple who is the recipient of the instructions and the result of such instructions, is even more forbidden than the previously said forbidden aspects. In those forbidden aspects, the impact is only for self [who engages in such aspects]; but not being at that level, this misunderstanding about the three aspects is bad for both self and the one who listened to the instructions – hence this is said to be highly forbidden. piLLai lOkAchAryar will further explain in sUthram 312 “iruvarkkum svarUpa sidhdhi illai” (Both the teacher and the disciple, will not attain their true nature).
