avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “What does it mean to think wrongly about self, disciple and the result?” piLLai lOkAchAryar explains.

sUthram 309

thannai mARAdi ninaikkaiyAvadhu – thannai AchAryan enRu ninaikkai; Sishyanai mARAdi ninaikkaiyAvadhu – thanakku Sishyan enRu ninaikkai; palaththai mARAdi ninaikkaiyAvadhu – dhrushta prayOjanaththaiyum, Sishyanudaiya ujjIvanaththaiyum, bhagavath kainkaryaththaiyum, sahavAsaththaiyum palamAga ninaikkai.

Simple Explanation

Considering wrongly about self is – thinking that the self is AchArya; considering wrongly about Sishya is – thinking of to be the disciple of self; considering wrongly about the result is – thinking that visible benefits, disciple’s liberation, kainkaryam to bhagavAn and being together with the disciple are the result.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

thannai mARAdi ninaikkaiyAvadhu …

That is – the AchArya who instructs, instead of thinking about him correctly,

[thannai] mARAdi ninaikkai

While instructing, he should consider his AchArya to be the AchArya of his Sishya and instruct the Sishya thinking that self is a limb of AchArya; instead, considering self, who is totally dependent on AchArya, to be the AchArya of his Sishya.

Instead of thinking about the Sishya who is the recipient of such instructions, correctly

[Sishyanai] mARAdi ninaikkai

While instructing, he should consider his Sishya to be his AchArya’s Sishya similar to self and instruct the Sishya; instead of doing that, thinking the Sishya to be self’s Sishya.

Instead of thinking about the result of such instructions correctly,

[palaththai] mARAdi ninaikkai

While instructing others, he should instruct the Sishyas considering Sishya’s performance of mangaLASAsanam to bhagavAn as said in thiruvAimozhi 8.3.3 “ALum ALAr” (there is no one to perform mangaLASAsanam to him in this whole world); instead of that, considering the following aspects as the result:

  • the wealth and assistance, which are visible benefits the Sishya will provide
  • the liberation where the Sishya becomes emancipated from samsAram
  • the kainkaryam (service) of reforming a Sishya to please the divine heart of emperumAn, instead of oneself engaging in physical kainkaryams such as taking care of divine garden etc
  • having companionship of the disciple while living in this samsAram, to eliminate the loneliness
