avathArikai (Introduction)

When asked “Should they be restrained in this manner? What will happen when AchArya looks after his body and Sishya looks after his true nature?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully responds.

sUthram 335

AchAryanukku dhEha rakshaNam svarUpa hAni; Sishyanukku Athma rakshaNam svarUpa hAni.

Simple Explanation

Caring for the body is damaging to the true nature of AchArya; caring for the self is damaging for the true nature of the Sishya.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

AchAryanukku …

That is – it is natural for the AchArya to care less for his body and Sishya should consider it as his true nature to care for the AchArya’s body; other than this, caring for the body is damaging for the AchArya’s true nature of being an AchArya; Sishya, after totally submitting himself to his AchArya, should see that his AchArya cares for self’s true nature and should not try to protect the self on his own; doing that will be damaging for Sishya’s true nature of being a Sishya. Thus, Sishya caring for the self and AchArya caring for the body should not be done even forgetfully.
