avathArikai (Introduction)

Thus, from sUthram 350 “manassukkuth thImaiyAvadhu” up to here, the following aspects were mercifully explained by piLLai lOkAchAryar

  • one should not think about the defects of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas
  • they are free from defects
  • if one thinks that they have defects, such defects are not theirs, but one’s own
  • the reason for those defects belonging to self
  • the answer for the doubt “What happens when one does not have any defect?”
  • if one sees defect in others, that is the biggest defect for self
  • since one does not have enough time to think about self’s defects and the auspicious qualities of bhagavAn and bhAgavathas, he has no time for thinking about others’ defects

In this context of mercifully explaining that one should not think about the defects in bhagavAn and bhAgavathas who are one’s goal, and even if he thinks that there are defects in them, he should think of that such defects as his own, piLLai lOkAchAryar is explaining how one should consider the defects of samsAris (worldly people).

sUthram 359

samsArigaL dhOsham svadhOsham enRu ninaikkak kadavan.

Simple Explanation

One should consider that the defects of samsAris are one’s own.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

samsArigaL …

That is – while observing the defects of samsAris such as turning away from bhagavAn, considering body to be self and claiming ownership of AthmA which is owned by bhagavAn, etc, instead of thinking of them to be inferior and thinking that we have nothing to do with them, one should think that their defects are also one’s own.
