avathArikai (Introduction)
piLLai lOkAchAryar says “Not just that there is no benefit, it will also lead to disaster”.
sUthram 438
thAli kidandhAl bhUshaNangaL paNNip pUNalAm; thAli pOnAl bhUshaNangaL ellAm avadhyaththai viLaikkum.
Simple Explanation
When thAli (mangaLasUthram) is present, one can make [other] ornaments and wear; but if it goes (after husband’s death), all other ornaments will lead to censure.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
thAli kidandhAl …
That is – for a woman who is pathivrathA (chaste), if the thAli, which indicates the relationship with her husband, remains, even if she does not have any ornaments, when she gets some money, she can make ornaments and wear them; but considering that there are many ornaments, if one removes the thAli, since the decorations will appear to be done on a widow, the other ornaments which are worn will lead to censure. With this, it is explained that – even if the ornaments of AthmA such as gyAnam, vairAgyam and bhakthi are not there, if the relationship with AchAryan remains in tact, by the mercy of the AchAryan, those can be acquired; but if the relationship with AchAryan is destroyed, the presence of noble qualities such as gyAnam, vairAgyam and bhakthi will cause disaster instead of being the cause for glorification.
