Vipasana: THE LEGEND OF KRISHNA: PUTANA MOKSHAM

krishNa was growing up nicely in SrI gOkulam. Mother yaSOdhA, SrI nandhagOpar and the cowherd girls were giving very loving care for him.

Somehow, kamsan came to know that it was krishNa who would kill him. He thought that he can get the demons who were his friends to kill krishNa. First he summoned a cruel demon named pUthanA. He told her “You go to gOkulam and kill krishNa who is there” and sent her there. She too immediately left there and reached gOkulam. Instead of going to krishNa in the demon form, she assumed a beautiful form similar to that of yaSOdhA and went there. yaSOdhA had put krishNa to sleep and gone to take care of her chores. At that time, pUthanA walked towards the place where krishNa was. Previously, she had applied poison on her bosoms with the intent to make him drink her milk and kill him with that poison.

krishNa too understood her arrival. He had decided that he will kill her through the apt means when she came. Since she looked like yaSOdhA, no one doubted her there. She lifted krishNa up and placed him on her lap and started feeding him. He too eagerly consumed her milk just as he would do with his mother. But soon, he started sucking her vital air through that and killed her. She cried out “hA” and fell down with her huge demon form and died. Seeing that, yaSOdhA came running to him, lifted him up and consoled him.

This incident was greatly enjoyed by many AzhwArs in many places. While identifying pUthanA, they have used the words “pEy”, “pEychchi” and “pUthanai” and become frightened due to her cruel act.

Let us see some amazing essence in this incident.

  • In SrI rAmAvathAram, emperumAn killed a female demon named thAtakA first. Here, in krishNAvathAram, he first killed pUthanA
  • Just as she pretended to have love towards him, he too pretended to have love towards her and drank her milk.
  • Though she had poison, she had it only for krishNa. Hence bhagavAn eagerly accepted it. He would accept anything which is kept exclusively for him.
  • His intention was not to kill her. But since she came with evil intentions, she was naturally killed by him.
  • No matter how perfectly one can pretend to have love towards emperumAn, emperumAn will easily understand it and shatter those thoughts.
