<< 7 – Stealing butter and getting caught

Previously we enjoyed how bhagavAn was bound by yaSOdhA. Once, after binding krishNa to a mortar, she went to do her chores. krishNa was stunned at that time, not able to do anything. In the end, he decided to crawl away pulling along the mortar. He pushed the mortar down and started strolling along with it. While he was strolling like that, he saw two yamaLArjuna (pair of arjuna) trees intertwined together. There is a story behind these trees. Let us see that.

kubEra’s sons naLakUvara and maNigrIva were once playing and ignored nAradha rishi’s arrival. nAradha rishi became angry and cursed them to become trees. They became scared and asked for forgiveness. nAradhar became merciful and told them “You will remain as trees in gOkulam for many years. bhagavAn will descend there and will relieve you from the curse”. Without any other option they accepted their fate and became yamaLArjuna trees.

These two trees remained very close to each other in gOkulam. At that time, krishNa arrived close to the twin trees, rolling the mortar along with him. He first entered through the gap between the twin trees and came out of the other side. While doing so, he started pulling the mortar too along with him. Due to the force, the twin trees broke down with a huge noise. He turned hearing that noise and as he got to see a sight which was never seen before, he beautifully smiled. Sages, AzhwArs and AchAryas become very immersed in this incident. Both naLakUvara and maNigrIva who came out of those trees, worshipped and praised krishNa and took leave from him.

This incident is enjoyed by AzhwArs in many places. nammAzhwAr says in thiruvAimozhi “pOnAy mAmarudhin naduvE en pollA maNiyE” (Oh my priceless gem who went through the twin marudha trees!); thirumangai AzhwAr says in periya thirumozhi “ninRa mAmarudhu” (The huge marudha trees which stood firmly); kulaSEkarAzhwAr says in perumAL thirumozhi “marudhu iRuththAy” (Oh one who knocked down the marudha trees). There many other such places. AchAryas have also explained that these trees were possessed by demons and hence were knocked down by krishNa.

Essence in this incident:

  • In spite of huge mistakes done by a person, if one realises those mistakes, by the grace of bhagavAn, one can escape the effect of the same.
  • No matter how big the enemy is, bhagavAn can easily destroy them.
