krishNa and balarAma, along with their friends would joyfully play in the forest. Once, when they were playing like that, the cowherd boys, who are their friends, told that there is a place named thAla vanam (Orchard of palm trees) where there is a lot of sweet fruits but a demon named dhEnukAsura who is in the form of a donkey is causing disturbance there. This dhEnuka was waiting for krishNa’s arrival. He too was sent by kamsan and was waiting to kill krishNa when he came there.
After coming to know about this, krishNa and balarAma went to thAla vana immediately. balarAma started shaking the trees which were filled with fruits. Fruits started falling down from the trees. Hearing that, dhEnukAsra came running towards balarAman. balarAman lifted him by his hind legs and threw him. dhEnukAsuran hit a tree and fell down, dead. More demons came to attack and krishNa and balarAma killed them all.
This incident is explained by AzhwArs in many pAsurams as krishNa himself having killed dhEnukAsuran – periyAzhwAr in his periyAzhwAr thirumozhi “dhEnukan Avi seguththup panangani thAn eRindhitta” (Killed dhEnuka by throwing him on palm trees); ANdAL in her nAchchiyAr thirumozhi “kAttai nAdith thEnuganum kaLiRum puLLum udan madiya vEttaiyAdi varuvAnai virundhAvanaththE kaNdOmE” (We saw krishNa who went to the forest and to kill dhEnuka, kuvalayApIdam elephant and bakAsura and hunt in this manner). Further thirumazhisai AzhwAr mercifully explains this dhEnukAsura vadham in a detailed manner in the 80th pAsuram – “vAsiyAgi nEsaminRi vandhedhirndha dhEnukan nAsamAgi nAL ulappa nanmai sEr pananganikku vIsi mEl nimirndha thOLil illai AkkinAy kazhaRku AsaiyAm avarkkalAl amarar AgalAgumE” (There is no other means for liberation than the divine feet of krishNa who threw dhEnukAsuran, who came in the form of a donkey, on the palm fruits and killed him).
Essence in this incident:
- Any effort to destroy bhagavAn will only end in failure.
- When we have bhagavAn as the companion, all good things will follow.
