After killing kuvalayApeedam, krishNa and balarAma entered the wresting arena. At that time, the wrestlers, the men and women were all amazed looking at both of them. All the noble people who were present there could understand their divine nature looking at their radiance.
Those wrestlers had huge bodies with great strength. chANUra invited krishNa and balarAma for a wrestling match. Though the wrestlers such as chANUra, mushtika et al had good understanding of the greatness of krishNa and balarAma, they came to fight with him unwillingly. They thought “Instead of remaining a coward, withdrawing from this bout and being killed in the hands of kamsa, let us be courageous and be killed by krishNa and balarAma”. krishNa and balarAma were small children. Due the overflowing love towards them, the people who were present there became frightened thinking that this battle will be between unequals.
krishNa fought with chANUra and balarAma fought with mushtika and both the wrestlers were killed. They also destroyed other wrestlers who came to attack them. All the people there became joyous seeing this. But kamsa became very frightened as they have killed the elephant, the mahout and now the wrestlers.
The way krishNa won over the wrestlers is highlighted by AzhwArs in many pAsurams. periyAzhwAr in his periyAzhwAr thirumozhi says “EviRRuch cheyvAn EnRedhirndhu vandha mallarai sAvath thagarththa sAndhaNi thOL chadhuran” (The wrestlers who came to fight on the orders of kamsa, were smartly destroyed by krishNa, without even disturbing the sandalwood paste anointed on his form); ANdAL nAchchiyAr says in thiruppAvai “mallarai mAttiya dhEvAdhi dhEvan” (the lord of lords who killed the wrestlers). nammAzhwAr in his thiruvAimozhi says “nigaril mallaraich cheRRadhum” (Destroying the matchless wrestlers). thirumangai AzhwAr in his thirunedundhANdaam says “malladarththu mallarai anRu attAy” (Fighting with the wrestlers and killing them previously).
Essence in this incident:
- Though bhagavAn appears as a human in the cowherd clan and remains a young child, he will have no shortcoming in his ability. He will easily defeat his enemies.
- Even enemies, when the understand the greatness of bhagavAn, will consider it to be a fortune to fight with him and being killed.
