There was a king named sathrAjith who was very devoted to sUrya. Appreciating his devotion, sUrya gave him syamanthaka maNi (jewel). This jewel is very radiant and will bestow great wealth. sathrAjith placed it in a chain and wore it and lived blissfully.
Once, he came to dhvArakA. He was shining greatly due to wearing that jewel. There he placed the jewel on an altar, in the place where he was residing, to be seen by all. Seeing that jewel, krishNa requested sathrAjith to present it to ugrasEna. But sathrAjith refused to do so.
Once sathrAjith’s brother prasEna wore that jewel and went for hunting. A lion killed him and took away that jewel. That lion went to the cave where jAmbavAn who was a great rAmabhaktha, was living. jAmbavAn killed that lion and took that jewel.
Here in dhvArakA, sathrAjith who could not see his brother, thought krishNa killed his brother and took that jewel. He started spreading this narrative to everyone. Hearing that, krishNa wanted to remove the blame which was unnecessarily placed on him. He went searching for the jewel in the forest. There he saw the dead body of prasEna. He also saw the footprints of a lion and understood what happened. He followed the footprints and reached jAmbavAn’s cave. There he observed that jAmbavAn’s daughter jAmbavathi was playing with the jewel. Seeing that, he tried taking the jewel from her, and she screamed loudly. Hearing that sound, jAmbavAn came there and starting wrestling with krishNa. The fight went on for twenty eight days. Finally as bhagavAn revealed his true form, jAmbavAn begged for forgiveness from him and submitted the jewel to him. Not just that, he also gave his daughter in marriage to krishNa.
Subsequently, he returned to dhvArakA and explained the events to sathrAjith and gave the jewel to sathrAjith. Realising his mistake, sathrAjith begged for forgiveness from krishNa and gave his daughter sathyabAmA in marriage to krishNa. sathyabAmA is a direct incarnation of bhUmip pirAtti. krishNa married sathyabAmA as well.
Then, krishNa heard the news of pancha pANdavas getting burnt down in the wax palace and went to hasthinApuram along with balarAma. At that time, by the instigation of kruthavarmA and akrUra, SathadhanvA killed sathrAjith and took away that jewel. Becoming very sad due to that, sathyabAmA at once went to hasthinApuram to see krishNa and informed him. krishNa returned immediately and killed SathadhanvA. But he had given the jewel to akrUra. Having known this, krishNa invited akrUra to dhvArakA, requested him to show the jewel once and gave the jewel to him for him to keep it with him.
In the commentary for nammAzhwAr’s thiruvAimozhi pAsurams “manisarum maRRum muRRumAy” and “vIRRirundhu Ezhulagum“, nampiLLai explains that bhagavAn incarnates in the world to help the AthmAs here in spite of getting insulted during his incarnations as said in “He stole syamanthaka maNi“.
Essence in this incident:
- bhagavAn did these amazing leelAs to marry jAmbavathi and sathyabAmAp pirAtti.
- While he incarnates in this world, without understanding him, many insult him. In spite of that, he incarnates repeatedly to help his devotees.
