pradhyumna was born as the son of krishNa and rukmiNi. In his previous life, he was manmatha (cupid). He is glorified as a partial incarnation of bhagavAn. manmatha was burnt down by Siva’s angry eyes. His wife rathi, became very sad. But since she understood that manmatha will be born again and marry her, she sustained herself. That manmatha was now born as pradhyumna.

A demon named Sambara considered pradhyumna as his enemy and snatched him a few days after he was born and threw him into the ocean. A big fish swallowed pradhyumna but was subsequently caught by fishermen who gifted that big fish to Sambara. Sambara gave that fish to his cooks who cut the fish to find out the beautiful child pradhyumna inside it. They gave that child to Sambara’s maid mAyAvathi. rathi disguised herself as mAyAvathi and was living there. At that time nAradha appeared there and informed rathi that the child’s name is pradhyumna and he is none other than manmatha born again here. mAyAvathi became blissful hearing that. She nicely raised pradhyumna and very soon he grew up to be a charming youth. He appeared very beautiful as krishNa. rathi informed the truth to pradhyumna and asked him to kill Sambara. pradhyumna invited Sambara for a battle and killed him eventually.

Subsequently, they both came to dhvArakA. Seeing pradhyumna, rukmiNi had overflowing motherly affection and her bosoms started secreting milk automatically. Though krishNa knew everything, he was simply watching everything. At that time, nAradha appeared there and explained everything to rukmiNi. Everyone became joyful.

pEyAzhwAr in his mUnRAm thiruvandhAdhi explains about pradhyumna in “magan oruvarkkallAdha mAmEni mAyan maganAm avan magan” (The amazing krishNa who is not a son of anyone became the son of vasudhEva and dhEvaki; pradhyumna is his son).

Essence in this incident:

  • Just as bhagavAn’s primary incarnations there are also some partial incarnations. One among them is manmatha and his incarnation pradhyumna.
  • Further, in vyUha state, bhagavAn remains in four forms viz vAsudhEva, pradhyumna, anirudhdha and SankarshaNa, Their representatives are krishNa, pradhyumna (son), anirudhdha (grand son) and balarAma, respectively in krishNAvathAram.
