<< Life in dhvArakA and nAradha’s joy
Once nAradha visited dhvArakA. krishNa came forward towards him, welcomed him, worshipped him and served him. Since he travels everywhere, krishNa asked him “How are the pANdavas?”. He replied “Now, the eldest amongst the pANdavas, yudhishtira is desiring to perform rAjasUya yAgam”. The yAdhavas who were present there wanted to kill jarAsandha. krishNa consulted with his minister udhdhava on the course of action. udhdhava said “Let us first kill big enemies like jarAsandha and then rAjasUya yAgam can be performed”. krishNa at once left for indhraprastha, pANdavas welcomed him affectionately. He then stayed there for a few months joyfully.
Once, in the pANdavas’ royal assembly, krishNa was also seated. At that time, yudhisthira announced his desire to perform rAjasUya yAgam. krishNa acknowledged and accepted it. yudhishtira then sent his brothers sent in all directions and made them bring a lot of wealth after defeating many kings. They were then discussing about how to defeat jarAsandha. krishNa said that jarAsandha respects brAhmaNas and let us use that to defeat him. That is, it will be difficult to defeat him with his great army, but he can be defeated individually by inviting him for a direct fight. krishNa, bhIma and arjuna disguised themselves as brAhmaNas, went to jarAsandha’s place and praised him well. jarAsandha told them “I will fulfil your desires”. krishNa told him “You have to fight with one amongst us, individually”. jarAsandha then understood that they are not brAhmaNas and asked them to reveal their true identity. When they showed him who they are, jarAsandha said that he will fight only with bhIma.
The battle began. They fought against each other fiercely like two mountains charging at each other. The battle was going on for a long time. At that time, when bhIma was looking, krishNa took a blade of grass, split it into two and threw them away. bhIma understood the plan. He held jarAsandha’s two legs with his two hands, tore his body into two halves and threw them away. In this manner, after jarAsandha was killed, krishNa made jarAsandha’s son as the king of the kingdom. He released thousands of kings who were imprisoned by jarAsandha. They then returned to indhraprastha and informed this happy news to yudhishtira. yudhishtira became joyful and started arranging for the rAjasUya yAgam.
In the commentaries for AzhwArs’ pAsurams given by our pUrvAchArayas, in many places, while explaining about how to think about and approach bhagavAn, they say that one should think about bhagavAn to serve him instead of thinking to kill him like kAlayavana, jarAsandha et al did.
Essence in this incident:
- Irrespective of one’s valour, if one lacks krishNa bhakthi, the valour is of no use.
- Those who perform rAjasUya yAgam will be glorified as chakravarthi. yudhishtira performed the yAgam to acquire such fame.
- For his devotees, pANdavas, krishNa helps in many ways by being their minister, friend etc.
