avathArikai (Introduction)

Subsequently, what is to be pursued and what is to be abandoned by such qualified persons who have svarUpa gyAnam and svarUpa yAthAthmya gyAnam as mentioned in chUrNikai 19 “SAsthrigaL …“, who are said to be pravruththiparar (those who are engaged in actions) and nivruththiparar (those who abandon [unnecessary] actions), are explained.

chUrNikai 24

nAlil onRu pravarthakam. onRu nivarthakam.

Simple Explanation

Among these four (SEshathvam (servitude), bhOkthruthvam (being the enjoyer), pArathanthryam (total dependence) and bhOgyathA (being enjoyed)), bhOkthruthvam will lead to engagement in the upAyam (means) and bhOgyathA will lead to giving up our efforts in the upAyam.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

That is – among these four – SEshathvam, bhOkthruthvam, pArathanthryam and bhOgyathA, SAsthris (those who are well versed in SAsthram), envisioned SEshathvam and bhOkthruthvam as AthmA’s true nature; bhOkthruthvam will propel the AthmA in engaging in upAyam to enjoy bhagavAn saying “Should the enjoyer not put in the effort for the enjoyment?”

sAragyars (those who are well versed in thirumanthram, which is the essence of SAsthram) have envisioned svarUpa yAthAthmyam (AthmA’s intrinsic true nature); bhOgyathA will propel the AthmA to withdraw from engaging in upAyam thinking “ISvaran who is the bhOkthA (enjoyer) should put in the effort to acquire this AthmA which is to be enjoyed by him; AthmA which is to be enjoyed by such bhagavAn has no right to put in efforts to attain the goal”.
