avathArikai (Introduction)

nAyanAr mercifully explains the greatness of AzhwAr in comparison with the sages in how he sustains himself etc.

chUrNikai 60

avargaLukkuk kAyOdu ennum ivaiyE dhArakAdhigaL; ivarkku ellAm kaNNaniRE.

Simple Explanation

For the sages, their sustenance is based on unripened fruits etc; for AzhwAr, everything is krishNa.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

avargaLukku … – That is, for the sages, as said in periya thirumozhi 3.2.2kAyOdu nIdu kani uNdu vIsu kadungAl nugarndhu” (eating unripened fruits and fruits which have dried for many days, consuming the blowing wind), periya thirumadalvIzhkaniyum Uzh ilai ennum ivaiyE nugarndhu” (only eating fruits which had ripened and had fallen on their own as well as leaves which dried up), fruits, roots, leaves, air and water are those which sustain them.

ivarkku ellAm kaNNaniRE – as said in parAnkuSAshtakam “rushim jushAmahE” (I worship nammAzhwAr, the rishi (sage)), though AzhwAr is also said to be a sage, he does not sustain with those; AzhwAr who is known as “krishNa thrushNA thathvam” (one who is embodiment of krishNa bhakthi), dhAraka (sustenance), pOshaka (nutrients) and bhOgya (enjoyment) are all krishNa as per thiruvAimozhi 6.7.1uNNum sORu parugu nIr thinnum veRRilaiyum ellAm kaNNan” (krishNa, my lord who is the son of vasudhEva as said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 7.19vAsudhEva sarvam” , is the food which is continuously consumed to sustain myself, water which is drunk to nourish me by quenching the thirst and betel leaves which are consumed for pleasure, and all other objects).
