avathArikai (Introduction)

Susequently, nAyanAr mercifully explains the parOpakArathvam (helpful for others) of AzhwAr’s incarnation, with example.

chUrNikai 82

janaka dhaSaratha vasudhEva kulangaLukku mUththa peNNum naduvil piLLaiyum kadaikkuttiyum pOlE ivarum piRandhu pugazhum Akkamum Akki anjiRaiyum aRuththAr.

Simple Explanation

Just as the first daughter of janaka, middle son of dhaSaratha and youngest son of vasudhEva, AzhwAr too brought fame, growth and eliminated imprisonment, after having been born.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

That is

sIthAp pirAtti who is the eldest daughter of janaka clan, took birth and brought fame to her clan of birth as said in SrI rAmAyaNam bAla kANdam 67.21 “janakAnAm kulE kIrthimAharishyathi mE suthA | sIthA barthAramAsAdhya rAmam dhaSarathAthmajam ||” (My daughter sIthA, will bring fame to the clan of janakas [all kings of this clan have the name janaka], after attaining SrI rAma, the son of dhaSaratha, as her husband).

SrI bharathAzhwAn who is the middle son of dhaSaratha clan, took birth and not only did he uphold the family honour of not having a younger one taking the throne while the elder one was present, by saying as in SrI rAmAyaNam 82.12 “rAjyancha ahancha rAmasya dharmam vakthum ihArhasi | katham dhaSarathAjjAthO bhavEth rAjyApahAraka: ||” (Both the kingdom and I belong to SrI rAma; you should speak in the righteous manner in this matter; how can one who is born to dhaSaratha, usurp the kingdom?), he also brought glories which did not exist previously for his clan, by having matted hair, wearing tree-bark clothes, and lying down in the pool of tears which flowed from his eyes, in separation from his elder brother, SrI rAma, as said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 100.1 “jatilam chIra vasanam prAnjalim pathitham bhuvi” (Having matted hair, tree-bark clothes, joined palms and fallen on ground) and SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 127.5 “pankadhikthasthu jatilO bharathas thvAm prathIkshathE” (bharthAzhwAn is having matted hair, dirty body and looking forward to your arrival).

krishNa, the youngest child of vasudhEva’s clan, took birth as said in periyAzhwAr thirumozhi 5.3.1 “makkaL aRuvaraik kallidai mOdha izhandhavaL than vayiRRil sikkana vandhu piRandhu ninRAy” (While kamsa smashed the six children on the rock, dhEvaki lost them all; you were born perfectly from womb), and broke the shackles of his mother and father, which could not be removed by them as said in periya thirumozhi 7.5.1 “thandhai kAlil peru vilangau thALavizha” (As the big shackles on his father’s feet, got removed).

AzhwAr too, mercifully incarnated and brought fame to the town he was born, as in thiruvAimozhi 4.2.11mali pugazh vaN kurugUr” (AzhwArthirunagari which has abundance of fame). Further, not only he remained within the boundaries of SEshathva kulam as said in thiruvAimozhi 9.2.2kudik kidandhu Akkam seydhu” (remaining within the boundaries of the clan and adding more fame), but added further glories by having his eyes and mouth dry up due to great pain of separation, saying as in thiruvAimozhi 8.5.2kANa vArAy enRenRu kaNNum vAyum thuvarndhu” (After looking out and calling out repeatedly saying “you should come to be seen by me”, my eyes and mouth dried up), fetched out tears as said in thiruvAimozhi 7.2.1kaNNa nIr kaigaLAl iRaikkum” (she is removing the tears from her eyes with her hands), remained without any activities as said in thiruvAimozhi 7.2.4itta kAl itta kaiyaLAy irukkum” (My daughter’s leg and hand remain [unmoved] wherever they were placed), and remained on the ground – due to this he brought great fame which did not exist previously, and eliminated the samsAra (bondage in this world) for those who are connected with him through learning his prabandham as said in thiruvAimozhi 1.3.11aRuvar tham piRavi am siRaiyE” (eliminate their birth in this world which is like being in a prison).

Since AzhwAr singularly performed the activities which were done by those three personalities and since all of these were in a way matching the svarUpam (true nature), AzhwAr’s birth is most helpful for others.
