avathArikai (Introduction)

Unlike in this manner [as explained previously], for the doubt of whether AzhwAr’s paramabhakthi came about due to the three means (karma, gyAna, bhakthi yOgams) in this birth or due to the practice of the same in previous births, nAyanAr establishes that neither one is the reason here, through AzhwAr’s words.

idagilEn nOnbaRivilEn kiRpan kIzh nALgaL engaiyAlE sAdhanathraya pUrvAbhyAsajam alla.

Simple Explanation

Since AzhwAr says in thiruvAimozhi 4.7.9idagilEn” (I will not give a handful of food or a glass of water), thiruvAimozhi 5.7.1nORRa nObilEn” (don’t know about karma yOga), thiruvAimozhi 3.2.6kiRpan” (I am incapable), periya thiruvandhAdhi 82kIzh nALgaL” (All the past births), his devotion is not a result of engagement in karma, gyAna and bhakthi yOga in the current birth and from the past births.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

That is

idagilEn – as said in thiruvAimozhi 4.7.9idagilEn …” (I will not give a handful of food or a glass of water to someone who is hungry or thirsty, respectively; I am unable to control my five senses; I am not being an obedient person who gathers flowers at appropriate times for worshipping and praising emperumAn; [Still]  having a heart with desire, very firm attachment which cannot be shaken by anyone and with overflowing affection, I, who am having strong sins, being ignorant, searched to see the lord who is having enjoyable divine chakra; where will I see him?), had I given some food to hungry persons or poured some water for thirsty persons, since these are part of dhAnam (charity) as explained in SrI bhagavath gIthA 18.5yagyadhAnathapa: karma” (vaidhika karmas such as yagya (sacrifice), dhAnam (charity), thapas (penance)), which is part of karma yOgam, it could have been said that I performed karma yOgam; but I did not do that. Had I controlled my senses from going towards worldly pleasures, that could be counted under gyAna yOgam; but I did not do that as well. Had I earned materials such as flowers etc at the appropriate times as mentioned in SAsthram and worshipped and praised bhagavAn in a regulated manner, that could be counted under bhakthi yOgam; but I did not do that as well.

nOnbaRivilEn – as said in thiruvAimozhi 5.7.1nORRa nObilEn” (don’t know about karma yOgam), I am not having karma yOgam which ends in the attainment of the result. Since such karma yOgam is not there, I don’t have gyAna yOgam which is about the subtle jIvAthmA and paramAthmA. Hence, it is to be understood that I don’t have bhakthi yOgam which is a culmination of karma and gyAna yOgams.

Since, AzhwAr has mentioned these, AzhwAr’s parama bhakthi is not a result of karma, gyAna, bhkathi yOgams practiced in this current birth.

kiRpan – as said in thiruvAimozhi 3.2.6kiRpan killEn enRilan muna nALAl” (In previous times, (if told to “do” – that is for the well-being) I will disagree saying ‘I am incapable’; (if told to “refrain” – that it is not good to engage in evil activities) I will not avoid engaging in such activities) – in the past, if I was told “kuryAth” (this is to be done) saying “It is good to do good”, I will disagree saying “I am incapable” and if I was told “na kuryAth” (this is not to be done) saying “It is not good to do bad”, I will not avoid saying “I am incapable”. In this manner, I ignored ordained duties and engaged in forbidden acts

kIzh nALgaL – as said in periya thiruvandhAdhi 82therindhu uNarvu onRinmaiyAl thIvinaiyEn – Azhiyangai ammAnai EththAdhu ayarththu – vALA irundhozhindhEn kIzh nALgaL ellAm” (lacking totally in knowledge which can be qualified as knowing truly – being ignorant and not praising emperumAn who had in his beautiful hand, the signet ring – I wasted all the past births), since I did not have the knowledge to analyse bhagavath vishayam, I, who am a sinner to waste the time meant for enjoying bhagavAn, being ignorant, wasted my time without performing mangaLASAsanam to sarvESvaran who is having the signet ring in his beautiful hand and went chasing the mystical deer due to being unable to disobey pirAtti’s words.

Since AzhwAr has mercifully said these things, this parama bhakthi is not a result from the practices done in previous births as well.
