avathArikai (Introduction)

Previously, piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explained that when prapaththi performed by the chEthana does not align with the divine heart of bhagavAn who is the refuge, it will be counted as an offence; further, to highlight that this prapaththi will be considered as an offence when we look at the chEthana’s previous activities, piLLai lOkAchAryar highlights the way bhAshyakArar (SrI rAmAnuja) conducted himself [while reciting gadhyam].

sUthram 146

sarvAparAdhangaLukkum prAyaSchiththamAna prapaththithAnum aparAdha kOtiyilEyAy kshAmaNam paNNa vENdumbadi nillA ninRadhiRE.

Simple Explanation

prapaththi which is an atonement for all offences, was in itself an offence, and bhAshyakArar had to atone for that.

vyAkyAnam (Commentary)

sarvAparAdhangaLukkum …

That is – as said in ahirbudhnya samhithai 36.38 “ahamasmi aparAdhAnAm Alaya:” (I am the abode of all offences), as the chEthana who is the abode of all offences performs prapaththi, sarvESvaran’s divine heart becomes pleased towards him as said in SrI bhagavath gIthA 18.66 “sarva pApEbhyO mOkshayishyAmi” (I relieve you from all of your sins), this prapaththi remains as the atonement for all offenses; when bhAshyakArar mercifully performed such prapaththi as said in SaraNAgathi gadhyam chUrNikai 5thvath pAdhAravindha yugalam SaraNam aham prapadhyE” (I surrender unto the pair of your divine lotus feet), as he thought about his previous activities, he felt that his prapaththi itself is an offense, and hence started reciting in chUrNikai 7thvamEva mAthA cha …” (You are my mother …) identifying the relationship which will make him bear and forgive those offences and recited in chUrNikai 9thasmAth praNamya …” (Hence, I am paying obeisance) saying “Please forgive me for standing in your divine presence and shamelessly committing the offense of performing prapaththi” and begged for forgiveness; hence, in this manner too, this prapaththi will be considered as an offense. Even after committing offenses all along, though I am being favourable towards you now, if we look at the divine heart of ISvara where he is said in SrI rAmAyaNam ayOdhyA kANdam 21.6 “ripUNAmapi vathsala:” (one who is loving towards enemies too) and SrI rAmAyaNam yudhdha kANdam 18.19 “yadhivA rAvaNasvayam” (even if it is rAvaNa himself, bring him), there is nothing surprising in bhagavAn accepting such chEthana. Though he remains in this manner, when a chEthana realises his previous activities, he must consider this prapaththi also as an offense and beg for forgiveness.
