avathArikai (Introduction)
Though the greatness of bhAgavathas are explained in ithihAsams etc in this manner, aren’t the SUdhra becoming a vipra (brAhmaNa) etc as mentioned in “na sUdhrA bhagavatha bhakthA viprA bhAgavathA smruthA: | sarva varNEshu thE sUdhrA yEhyabhakthA janArdhanE ||” (Those who are devoted to bhagavAn are not SUdhras. In every birth, they are known as bhakthas, brAhmaNas; those who lack devotion towards janArdhana are SUdhras) simply glorification? When asked “Can a person born in inferior birth become superior in the same birth?” piLLai lOkAchAryar presents an example to show that it is possible.
sUthram 227
kshathriyanAna viSvAmithran brahamrishiyAnAn.
Simple Explanation
viSvAmithra who was a kshathriya (king) became a brahmarishi.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
kshathriyanAna …
That is – viSvAmithra who was born in kshathriya clan, due to the great penance he performed, by the ordainment of sage vasishta, became brahma rishi in that same birth, where there was no trace of his kshathriya background; hence, there is no shortcoming in saying that even if one is born in a very inferior clan, with that same body, by the specific ritual of becoming connected with the most powerful bhagavAn, one can be considered as superior due to being followed by those who are having very superior birth. If we see the effect of the ordainment of vasishta who has limited ability, what cannot be achieved by the connection with the omnipotent lord!
