avathArikai (Introduction)
Subsequently, piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains the obstacles which are to be compulsorily eliminated while AchArya and Sishya are engaged in caring for the AthmA (self) and dhEham (body).
sUthram 336
AchAryan Athma rakshaNam paNNumidaththil ahankAram virOdhi; Sishyan dhEha rakshaNam paNNumidaththil mamakAram virOdhi.
Simple Explanation
While AchArya cares for the Sishya’s AthmA, pride is the obstacle; while Sishya cares for the AchArya’s divine form, possessiveness is the obstacle.
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
AchAryan Athma rakshaNam paNNumidaththil …
That is – for the AchArya who is focussed on the well-being of the Sishya, while caring for the Sishya’s AthmA through his instructions etc, the ahankAram which makes one consider “I am protecting the Sishya”, is the obstacle for his qualification of being totally dependent on his AchArya; for the Sishya who is focussed on the pleasure of the AchArya, while protecting the AchArya’s divine form through his wealth etc, the possessiveness of considering “I am protecting my AchArya with my wealth and my faculties in this manner”, is the obstacle for his qualification of considering all his body, wealth, life etc to be that of the AchArya.
