<< 3 – Killing of pUthanA

Another amazing leelA during krishNa’s cradle times is killing of SakatAsuran. This incident is also enjoyed and beautifully expressed by AzhwArs in many places. nammAzhwAr beautifully enjoys this incident saying “thaLarndhum muRindhum sakatavasurar udal vERA piLandhu vIyath thirukkAl ANda perumAnE!” (Oh lord who engaged your divine foot to make SakatAsura’s body lose its form by losing firmness, splitting it into two to become different pieces and to break it!).

Once, mother yaSOdhA made a cradle on the wheels of a cart, made krishNa sleep there and went to look after her chores. At that time, a demon who was sent by kamsan was thinking about an easy way to kill krishNa, and thought about entering the wheel of the cart and did that. He started rolling towards krishNa with the intent of killing him. At the same moment, krishNa woke up, and started crying for mother’s milk, kicking his divine feet in the air. That SakatAsuran came close to emperumAn’s divine feet and got kicked by the divine feet. He immediately became weak, broke into pieces and fell on the ground. The cart too fell apart immediately. Seeing this, mother yaSOdhA ran towards krishNa, picked him up and embrace him. Everyone there thought that krishNa was saved by bhagavAn’s grace only.

Essence in this leelA [playful activity]:

  • Just as bhagvAn’s divine feet are the protection for us, they are the protection for him too.
  • bhagavAn need not take separate, huge efforts to kill his enemies. He can easily accomplish that.
  • bhagavAn need not require any separate weapons to kill his enemies. He can do that with the ability of his divine form/limbs itself.
