avathArikai (Introduction)
When asked “In that case, what is the true nature of prapaththi?” piLLai lOkAchAryar mercifully explains.
sUthram 55
idhu thanakku svarUpam thannaip poRAdhozhigai.
Simple Explanation
The true nature of prapaththi is that it will not accept itself as upAyam (means).
vyAkyAnam (Commentary)
idhu thanakku …
idhu thanakku svarUpam
What is the distinguished nature of prapaththi?
thannai poRAdhozhigai
prapaththi which is the pursuit of upAyam (bhagavAn, the means), will not tolerate to be called as upAyam. That is – unless looked at superficially, this prapaththi will not qualify to be considered as upAyam.
Alternatively,
thannaip poRAdhozhigai
Without adding any additional words [in the sUthram, it could be understood that], it will not tolerate itself to be upAyam though it is recognized to be one.
In either case, not tolerating itself as upAyam is the meaning.
